Another Load Order Thread

Sorry about this. I am sure posts like this crop up a lot but unfortunately I am too exhausted from trying to figure out the problem myself and am in need of help.

I've come back to Oblivion from years of leaving it alone. I reinstalled it all a year ago with mods and it crashed a lot, but it did at least run. It is still installed on my hard drive so I tried it again but it wouldn't run (crashed before even loading - ran through OBSE).

I tried disabling everything other than oblivion but still refrained from even trying to load, so I have reinstalled oblivion (now working) copied all the data over from the previous install, reinstalled FCOM and installed new deadly reflex 6.

The game still opens correctly which is good, but crashes on initial loading bar. (It pushes forward one small notch, waits a little bit, then crashes).

To note, I have installed recent OBSE, OBGE, few versions of mods that I saw that have been updated, Wrye Bash for new bashed patches, and even new OBMM, oh and BOSS.

If someone experienced wouldn't mind taking a quick look at my load order and let me know of any obvious problems that would be great. Any other advice welcome. I seem to remember reading a good few ears ago that if Oblivion crashes at the start of the initial loading bar it is related to .esm files, is that true or am I getting confused?

It would be infinitely more helpful to post your load order from Wrye Bash.
In the mods tab, right click on the header File, go to List Mods, and copy/paste the list as is.

Run BOSS as per the readme and pay attention to the log that is created. Streamline always goes after the Bashed Patch.

There are some FCOM installation errors there. Check the current FCOM release thread's OP (and the links it tells you to follow, as well). Read all that you need to. Check it against what you've already done. Make adjustments as required. Said thread is generally in the first two pages in this forum - not hard to find. Reading its OP and precisely following the instructions there is *mandatory*, if you want to get this process right, and save yourself - and possibly others - further hassle.

As for Streamline, BOSS places that early to mid in my load order. YMMV. But no, it doesn't necessarily go after the Bashed Patch; that much is certain.

The Wrye Bash visual guide is very handy, too. It's at the Nexus, and easily found via search, like everything there. You might also find http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/ useful, because well, it is. However, in any case that official release threads contradict it, go with the official word, of course. This should be a rare occurrence, if it happens at all, but it's worth remembering.

And make sure you read the readme file that comes with just about any given mod out there. It's worth the little bit of time, and minimal effort, that it takes. Likewise, check for compatibility issues and/or patches, before you go installing anything/everything.

Equally important: take it slow. Install perhaps a couple of mods, tops, at a time. Test to see if all is well in-game. Rinse and repeat. A real sanity-saver, this.

edit: If you are keen on the idea at all, you might find that a BAIN installation will, inevitably, further save time and sanity, because of the ease with which you can track changes, conflicts, etc., and roll back any changes. It's a superb mod installation/configuration/uninstallation tool. Unsurpassed, really. But it does require a bit of learning. Again, the visual guide to Wrye Bash, and Tomlong's site, would be immensely helpful here. Either way though, the rest of my post will apply equally.

BOSS used to load it after the Bashed Patch. But that was changed quite some time ago. :D

But yeah AlexRieper, start with running BOSS and reading through the output page, before looking further.

Not that it is related to your problems (I think), but you should definitely update my mods (Enhanced Economy and Map Marker Overhaul), as you're using quite outdated versions. Follow the link in my signature for a fresh list of my mods :)

I used to be up to date with everything last time I played. Yep, I installed mod by mod - redoing the bash everytime and always loaded (unless mod conflict). I guess I may have to redownload/reinstall all the mods again over a new install. Which will be a PAIN but at least it will work. I am interested in this BAIN installer, think I must have missed the news on that. I have only ever used .esp/omods through obmm before. Is BAIN that much better? I liked omods because it asked you all the options you need and seemed to do it all for you. Also people set up omod ready mods. Does BAIN do the same thing?

I will mess around with this a little bit based on suggestions, but will probably need to take some time to completely reinstall it all, with the help of this BAIN I guess. Sounds intruiging.

As with BOSS I had done everything the log told me to do. Taken all error steps it suggested, and other steps applicable, so I can't see what I have missed there. I did know that Streamline used to have to go after the bashed patch, but as BOSS placed it somewhere else I presumed times had changed and it was in the right place. Is this not the case? Should it still be at the end?

I am a little worried about the FCOM installation now. What FCOM installations errors were you talking about? I have already followed the FCOM thread's installation by the letter so theoretically it should be fine shouldn't it? I installed all updates (that I could see in the list/posts) and made sure I did them all in order. What gave you the impression there are errors? :confused:

Thanks for the 'complete installation guide' btw. Will have to use that. Hopefully it will teach me this BAIN. Also, thanks for letting me know about the updates on Enhanced Economy and the Map Marker Overhaul. P.S. good work on them also. ;)

I am apologising for the "Streamline always goes after the Bashed Patch". Looking for a non Cobl esp that is not green or black in Wrye Bash can alert you to a missing esm/esp file needed for Oblivion to work.If you installed your mods as OMOD's you can deactivate them one by one to find out which individual mod is causing your problem and try to avoid a complete reinstall.

A full re-install isn't necessary, this can be fixed. There's no need to re-install just to make a BAIN installation either. Read up on it if you like, it's good to know how it works, then you can decide if you like OBMM or BAIN (it's really 6 of one, half a dozen of the other). They both do the same thing. There's no reason you can't use both either.

When it crashes during load screen, is that when trying to start a New character or loading a Save game?
Are you using any UI mods or loading screen replacers or body replacers?

Yes, times have changed and it's ok for Streamline to be where BOSS placed it.

Odd things to be fixed;

- Should be using OMOBS instead of MOBS for FCOM installs. (As it states in the BOSS report)

- Open Cities install is completely wrong and is very outdated, it's up to http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16360
or there's the newest http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=33003
I don't see the cities esp's, you can't just have Open Cities - SI installed. Also missing the merged road records.

- Will need http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=32925 and various things;

- You could certainly use some of these http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13834; (I see at least 14 of them you need on quick glace)

I'm not saying these fixes will fix all your problems, these are just things I'm noticing.
When all else fails, regenerating the oblivion.ini (in your User\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder) sometimes works miracles. :)

IMHO, BAIN is superior to OBMM. The main reason is the tracking of files. You can install mod a that overwrites resources from another, deactivate mod a, and the resources from the other mod are reinstalled.

It also watches files for you. You can see a complete run-down of what files comprise a BAIN package. OBMM had something similar, but not as elegant as BAIN.

You can also do partial installs of mods by creating sub-packages. Install a sub-package, but not another, and go back and install just the sub-package you skipped at any time. Plus you can deselect ESP/M's and anneal the package and it will remove them for you.

I think BAIN is the next step in mod packaging and installation. OBMM is the first step.

Some people say OBMM has a scripted install option, but so does BAIN.

Hey thanks to everyone who has given me advice and help with this. I have reinstalled Oblivion,SI,patch, etc and decided to go the BAIN route. Omg it's amazing. I honestly don't see myself using obmm anymore, unless I find a real reason too. But that's another point entirely.

It's taken a good couple of weeks setting it all up, finding more amounts of 'necessary-to-me' mods, think I've finally got to the stage that it is working... more-or-less, solidly. BAIN is definitely the way to go imo.

Only problem I have noticed now is that I have decided to go to Shivering Isles... and after getting close to the gate the game crashed. :S I then entered and crashed again inside. Loaded again and crashed soon after being 'let in'. I've now worked out that when over I am anywhere inside shivering isles, or near the entrance portal (anywhere the expansion has added) it *WILL* crash within, so it seems, exactly 8 and a half minutes in.

Obviously this makes SI pretty hard to play.

I did place the other DLC in a 7zip file, alongside shivering isles in different 7zip purely to be run through BAIN to keep things more organized (as I have literally everything installed through BAIN whether needed to or not).

My question is, could putting shivering isles in a 7zip have then using BAIN to install it again have messed this up? I have tried manually exporting the files into the data folder (as originally it would have been) and removing it from BAIN, but still crashes. Would that be the likely cause?

Otherwise I could reinstall Shivering Isles from disk but could that cause any potential problems with the game that's already been heavily modded?

OK, so I reinstalled Shivering Isles. 'Annealed', did another bashed patch to see what would happen. I got to a dungeon in Shivering Isles (within passwall) so completed it, all good.

Then returned to Tamriel. Now, it seems Shivering Isles is crash free, but Tamriel will now crash after pretty much exact 2 and half minutes in. It is obviously something to do with Shivering Isles, because the game was, more-or-less fine until I entered. I can't think what it could be, but literally If I load a new save in Tamriel it WILL crash after that time, no matter WHAT I am doing. have even tried loading the game and just leaving the character there, not touching a thing - still crashes after that time.

I'm really at a loss as to what to do. I've been fiddling a bit, but removing mod by mod isn't really an option when it takes 15 minutes every time to make a new bashed patch. Could anyone let me know if any of the mods I am using are known to conflict with SI?

I am also using the latest obse - 20 beta5, could that be causing the constant crashes after load? Or any other obse plugin? Are time specific CTD related to anything in specific? Sorry, I'm obviously no expert. :P
