Antialiasing settings - something not right

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 6:01 pm

I've just done a complete reinstall of Skyrim, so I'm now running the latest version of the vanilla game (with no ini edits but with official HD textures DLC as it automatically downloads). I've been having AA issues since last November and both the game and catalyst drivers have been updated a few times and I'm still having the same issues.

I have a Radeon HD6970 2GB (Catalyst 12.1).

I suspect something is not working correctly with the AA/AF settings - though I'm not sure if it's due to me, due to Skyrim or due to Catalyst. I tried a test in the same location (outside Whiterun) and these are my results:

Skyrim launcher AA/AF set to off and catalyst AA/AF set to use application settings - I get 59-61fps around Whiterun. Of course I also get horrible jaggies.

Skyrim launcher AA/AF set to off and catalyst AA/AF set to override application settings (8x Supersample AA and 16xAF with Catalyst AI set to performance) - I get 59-61fps around Whiterun but STILL GET JAGGIES EVERYWHERE! The Catalyst AA/AF does not seem to be overriding the Skyrim settings. It's always been this way for me.

Skyrim launcher AA/AF set to off and catalyst AA/AF set to override application settings (8x MSAA and 16xAF with Catalyst AI set to performance) - I get 49-54fps around Whiterun (lower fps than with catalyst supersample AA) but STILL GET JAGGIES EVERYWHERE! The Catalyst AA/AF still does not seem to be overriding the Skyrim settings. But if it's not, then why am I seeing an FPS drop in exactly the same area as when I was running Catalyst SSAA?

And of course when I turn Skyrim AA/AF settings on things seem to be a little screwy:

Skyrim launcher AA/AF set to 8/16 and catalyst AA/AF set to use application settings - I get 20fps (25fps max) around Whiterun. I have an overclocked i7 2700K@4.5ghz and 16gb ram. Surely in an unmodded game something is awry.

However even though I've told catalyst to use application settings, if I change the catalyst AA settings to MSAA (bearing in mind I've told it to use the application settings) then I get 49-54fps around Whiterun but still get some jaggies (but not as much as when AA was off completely).

Is it just me, or does it look like catalyst and skyrim AA are conflicting with eachother somewhere down the line?

Sounds similar to my experience with 12.1. Are you also seeing really ugly "painted on" snow like this? I don't recall "vanilla" Skyrim looking this bad. (do some editing because the forum software won't let me post pics)

Yep, that looks like the snow I've always had, with earlier versions of Skyrim and earlier versions of Catalyst.

I think my main concern is that this antialiasing issue has been happening (despite various updates of both Skyrim and Catalyst) since November 11 2011.

Yep. Same here. If anything, I'm glad I'm not the only one as it makes me inclined to think it's a driver issue (again). Just a guess but it might have something to do with the recent implementation of MLAA?

Well at least it doesn't appear just to be me!

As for the MLAA, I don't even have it checked - but I have the issues regardless of whether I have morphological filtering checked or not.

Does anyone else have the issue as described in my first post, or is it just the two of us?

I have an i5-2500k and an unlocked 2GB 6950 and have the same problems, and I too think it's a driver issue. But Catalyst 12.3 WHQL was released today, I'm hoping that fixes AA issues...

Just done a fresh install of 12.3 -

With Skyrim AA/AF set to off, and Catalyst set to 8/16 and set to override application settings - it's still not overriding and there's still jaggies everywhere!

Edit: also tried turning Skyrim AA/AF to 8/16 and setting Catalyst to use application settings - and still getting 25fps max around Whiterun exterior. As mentioned before, with an i7@4.5ghz and 6970 2gb and a vanilla game, does it make sense for the fps to be this low?

I have a AMD PhenomIIx4 810 (3.1Ghz OC) and a HD5770 1Gb with 6Gb DDR3 and i get a max of 31 FPS in the plains outside Whiterun, if i use Catalyst 12.1 PREVIEW (yes, preview) i get a little boost but is still choppy enough, i am starting to hate AMD drivers... and bethesda keeps worsening some things on each patch, i used to have a max of 58 everywhere when 1.4 first arrived, now i got horrible performance that does not makes up for all the new features of 1.5.

hmm...your system isn't as fast as mine and you're reporting a comparable 31fps outside Whiterun - what are your AA/AF settings? Do you have them checked in Skyrim launcher or in Catalyst (or in both)?
