Any good File Hosting sites?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 7:24 am

I've got some files that I need to move from School to home, however the size is too much for the school hosting thing.

So I need to find a site that I can host my files on, has at least 25MB storage space, is free and won't give me a virus, really :P. I don't really want to use MegaUpload or MediaFire as I've heard some bad things about those places.

So, any suggestions?

https://www.dropbox.com/

I use it and it's quite nice. With a free account you get 2GB of storage.

https://www.dropbox.com/. Secure, offers 2 GBs of space for free.

https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive offers 5 GB free space

https://www.sugarsync.com/ offers 5 GB space as well

http://www.wuala.com/ offers 1 GB, but you can trade local space for more storage.

Those would be my picks for cloud storage.

I'd also like to point out there is nothing bad about MegaUpload or Mediafire, but those sites aren't for private cloud storage.

You need admin rights to use a USB at my school.

Ouch. My school sold us all USB drives at cut price rates when they first became ubiquitous. 128MB. :P

There's nothing bad about mediafire, but it seems like a cloud storage site would be better for you than somewhere to host archives and single files (as you do with Mediafire).

Dropbox is my favourite. Just a regular desktop folder that you drag stuff into. Connects well with smartphones/tablets as well.

I recommend also linking to your files with Adf.ly, people pay you to visit your links through this, and the best part? iTS NOT EVEN THEIR MONEY THEY USE!

They get their link, you get your money, the only loss here is advertisemant company money.

1. That's evil

2. AdF.ly is always evil in all circumstances

3. They are his files for himself, not sharing them with others.

I don't even click those links unless I can bypass them, so that's a loss there... inconveniencing people who aren't computer morons.

If it's truly 25GB you're after, http://www.skydrive.com/ supposedly gives it to you (need a WindowsLive account).
I'd think it'd be unlikely to get a virus from Microsoft supported service. Nothing's impossible ... but unlikely. No idea if it's worth getting an account with them or how good/easy to use they are, tho.

Edit: Oh wait, they may limit individual files size, tho...that's probably too limiting. ...

Been an avid user of Dropbox as well. You can get a lot more free space by giving out referrals (250mb afaik, per referral) as well as doing some stuff like surveys. I think I have 3 GB on my Dropbox account right now.

More seriously, if you want to store something you don't want anyone else to see, encrypt it before uploading it to dropbox.

Secure as far as cloud storage goes, yes I am well aware of their past problems, but all I use it for is school documents and I don't think there's a single cloud storage system that hasn't had issues.

I agree, but I wouldn't call them secure.

Point taken.

I wonder if an SFTP server is out of the question for the OP?

That is how I would do it....but I am thinking, that if a USB stick is out of the question, then they probably have the ports blocked.

Well, given that 1. The school isn't doing actual traffic anolysis and 2. His home ISP doesn't block port 80/443, setting up SSH to use a non-standard port is trivial.

Of course then there's the question of how to get the keyfile over to his computer at school (keyboard auth over the Internet? Ewww)

Secure enough for most of your cloud hosting needs. I mean I wouldn't trust them with any valuable files or information, but then again if I was looking for a secure host I wouldn't be looking at free hosting services.
