It's an awesome game ... hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

My best advice: save and save often. Don't rely on auto-saves.

Otherwise, scout around this forum. There are some quests that (still) have a few bugs.

Don't try to go to New Vegas as soon as you can through the I-15, you will die.
Spoiler
The Main Quest will lead you to Vegas eventually, and, when you see the sign "Warning! Deathclaws ahead" you know what to do

Judging by the problems reported on this site, my main suggestion would be to save regularly, and maybe back up your saves!
I think any other tips would risk spoiling the game for you.

Broad question, but ill try to help.

Have an idea for your character and stick with it.

Certain skill overlap in what they can do, don't invest in two skills that do similar things (I.E. medicine and survival both heal in different ways, energy weapons and guns both kill stuff.)

Plan your character. Certain perks and have S.P.E.C.I.A.L. requirements. Make sure your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. can get you the perks you want.

That's all pretty general, have fun :)

My advice is don't worry too much. It's a very open game with a lot of directions you can go in (both literally and figuratively) and there aren't really any "wrong" choices. There are consequences to many of your choices, but that's part of the fun of the game. And the replayability is really good so even if you make one faction hate you in your first go-round don't worry about it, just go with it. You can be friendly to them on your 2nd playthrough.

-You're gonna encounter bugs. Save often and in different slots.
-http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki is the best source of information.
-Make sure to patch up to the latest version.
-Patches might not do. If you're on pc, check http://www.newvegasnexus.com/ for bug fix mods (and anything else you might like).
-Have fun! That's what games are for.

Speech is much more important in this game.

only invest in one weapon skill.

the charisma special stat is still useless, may as well set it to one.

Dont make enemy's with Caesars legion or NCR too early.

All of the above, plus you're going to end up with a lot more stuff than you can carry and stashing it somewhere you feel secure (a motel room maybe). Don't just dump it on the floor, divide it up between containers, fridges, wardrobes, whatever, so that when you need something it's easy to find.

And don't open doors standing on the hinge side.

Or use a machine gun/grenade/rocket etc on something your companion is in a melee fight with.

At the early stages of the game try not to get on the NCR or Legion's bad side, getting attacked randomly by either the Rangers or Assassins is not a lot of fun.

Stick to the roads if you want to live. If you see an orange fly, don't do what I did and think, 'oh it's just a bug' it will [censored] you up. And if you see a Deathclaw, run.

It cannot be overstated: SAVE

Save early and save often.

Turn off Save on Rest
Turn off Save on Wait
Turn off Save on Fast Travel

Manually save after every major event: Conversations that initiate Quests, Every time a Quest increments, Every level-up, Just before fast traveling, Just before you go through a named door and just before you engage an NPC in what could contain a speech challenge.

And then, on top of all that save after you have just completed a long series of actions or travel that you don't want to have to do again if something goes awry.

Don't play your first game on hardcoe. leave the gameplay on the default difficulty setting. When you get to a part where you keep dying, consider resetting it lower (you can do this while you are actually playing.) Don't forget to put it back. If you find things too easy, bump it up.

Oh, did I mention: Save often. The Wastes are a dangerous place.

When you make your first trip back up to the cemetary, you'll see Vegas off in the distance, especially at night with the lights all aglow, like it's taunting you. It's so tempting to just head straight for it.

DON'T. You will end up horrifically dead.

I like to plan my perks at the start. That way you will know the skills you need to tag, and build up from the start, and how to bulid your special. I also recommend starting out on a normal playthrough. I like the hardcoe mode but that much resource management on the first playthrough would have been a little much.

when saving, try to create as many new saves as possible. Even if you save often, there will be times that you wish there were more than one save profile for any given character build. At the end of my first play through I had 60+ saves.

Find a home for yourself, preferably one with a bed, water source and or a container for keeping your extra loot.

Find a companion so you don't have to sell so often.

Be careful what you give your companion(s), if you give them explosives or stimpaks they'll use them, if you give them guns they'll loot bodies for ammo and use them.

Additionally, if you don't mind taking the trouble to keep stocked on lockpick and science magazines, you can save 40 skill points by maxing the skill Lockpick and Science to 80 (and no higher!) if you take the Comprehension perk. You can find magazines on merchants and in mailboxes, sometimes on the ground as loot too.

When (if) you eventually upgrade ED-E, take everything out of his inventory first or you'll lose it.

Invest in speech, science, lockpick, and repair.

You get a perk every other level instead of every level. This is not a bug.

Do not underestimate Cazadores. Ever. Run away if you see them and don't have any antivenom on you.

And as someone stated before, don't rely on autosave! I spent a lot of time redoing the things as the save on wait/rest/fast travel simply does not actually function, for me at least. I advise you befriend your quicksave button, make it a habit.

And if you like to loot, make sure you have a high-ish lockpick. You get less skill points on level up in New Vegas (I think? I just realised I could be wrong here can someone confirm? *sheepish grin*) I suggest ensuring it's a tag skill. There are also a lot of speech and barter checks with good results, so I suggest investing some points in them too.

And think hard about the perk you are about to choose! Unless you're on PC and can add mods to alter the perk on every second level or up your level cap, I'd suggest you think hard about what you're going to pick.

Speech. It's very powerful and will save you endless grinding. 50 repair and some common loot will make you 'weapon repair kits' at any workbench. Very useful as repair is expensive and you can acquire some fine weapons in terrible condition fairly early on.

Never ever bring ED-E or Rex into a casino!

Spoiler
They will loose their ability to attack. Rendering them useless.

Something that i learned on my first playthrough. Strength is infinitely important since with lots of weapons you need a certain amount of strength to either keep it still so your shots are accurate or to hold some weapons altogether. Another one is to Build up your barter so that when you scavenge the [censored] out of the lucky 38 mainfloor (since none of it is marked as owned and most of it is valuable to a new character) you can sell them for quite alot.

Hope this helped! :foodndrink:

What grinding? There is no need for grinding in NV.

I meant that you will be able to fulfill missions without a lot of extra fooling around if you have high speech. The game is pretty long already.

Grinding in the classical RPG manner ... no.
