Every horse you buy returns to it's stables once you get a new one. I haven't tried, but I'd assume Shadowmere returns to his black pond

I have Shadowmere and Frost and I switch between the two often. When the I switch to one the other just stays right where I left it.

Now I just need a house with a stable that I can keep my two horses in.

Would like to know as well. I had bought a horse (black) at Windhelm and when I got Shadowmare from the DB story I 'lost' my paid for horse. I'm assuming he's back at the Windhelm stable but haven't checked yet.
Can Shadowmare die? She kicks ass, but I have had my paid for horse die before.

I just wish you could leave a horse in the stable and have it stay there until you went to get it. Every time I fast travel the stupid horse is there whether I want it or not.
