Any solution for crashes to desktop?

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 10:33 am

After about an hour or so of play, my game crashes to desktop. My specs are intel i7-2630Q @2.8ghz with nvidia geforce gt540m and 6gb of ram. I play with everything at high settings except shadows. Any fix to this problem or will I have to wait for a patch? Is this my fault? Please let me know!

Does it quit to desktop without warning or error message? That happened to me and I found a fix for it and has not happened since. I read on another thread here that you need to make game use more than 2GB RAM. Google "4GB Patch" and apply it to the game's EXE. As far as I know, this only works on 64-bit computers. Hope this helps ya :)

Hi all. I made an account here so I could reply this. I just downloaded and applied the 4gb patch and 20 minutes in no crashes yet, that's good news because before the patch I was crashing every 5 minutes or less. I'll update after an hour or two.

Am I doing something wrong? I tried installing that 4GB patch by patching the Skyrimlauncher.exe in the Skyrim folder in the steam apps/common folder, but when I try to launch the game it gives me a message that says "error 51." Am I patching the wrong exe or something?

You're supposed to patch TESV.exe

I changed the auto-save period from the standard 15 minutes down to 5 minutes and I haven't had a crash since.

oh. Does that mean I have to run my game through the TESV exe or can I still use the launcher?

Does this work?
Why would changing the autosave timeframe change things?

I have no idea why this would work but before I was getting a CTD every 30 mins or so and since then I have played 2 hours uninterrupted. Just thought I would mention it.

SOLUTION : Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Default Device\Advanced

Change it from what ever you got to 16bit, 44100Hz

Worked for me :)

I heard on another forum that changing shadows to low quality might help, i played for 1.5 hours last night with no error, could be a fluke? comeon Bethesda! you can fix this!

specs:

Intel I7-960 @3.4ghz
Nvidia GTX570
18gb Corsair XMS3 Ram
Windows 7 64-bit
Acer 24" LED monitor

Well I think I know what the problem is for me. I was getting the CTD like a lot of you, but mine seems to only happen in the White River Watch cave. It would literally crash every few seconds when I was in it so I loaded up a save at the cave entrance before I went in and no more crashing so far. So I guess I can't do the quest in that cave until there is a fix.

Me again. Been playing a little over an hour with no crashes! I haven't changed anything since I installed the 4gb patch, so I do believe that is what fixed it!

4GB patch did not help me. Got a crash to desktop about 30 minutes into playing. This time it crashed while going through a door, while it was autosaving. Now, not only does that auto save crash me to desktop when I try and load it, picking ANY SAVE crashes to desktop.

Time to reinstall. :brokencomputer:

Reinstalled and no change. Picking any of my saves results in an instant crash to desktop.

This svcks big time.

Started new game up until it auto saved and then did a new save. Loading both of those works fine. While in that new game tried loading some of my older ones and instant crash to desktop. Kept going back and found one that worked! 11 saves ago, about 7 hours of play. Yipee

To the people that suggest changing the sound quality: I find this fix only helps those who are having trouble even getting into the game. Many of us are able to play the game for an hour or so only to be hit with a random crash to desktop with no error message, which changing the sound quality does not fix.
