Any way to increase a companions hp?

Is there a console command to permanently increase a companions HP? Would love to double Lydia's HP. Also, is there any reason not to make her an essential char, so she cannot die? Are there any negative repercussions?

Open the console, target Lydia and type setav health xxx.

Companions are essential so long as you dont deal the killing blow. Be carefull with adept destruction spells
