Any Way to Slow Level Progression?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 10:39 am

Simple question really. I use the PC to alter things with the console but ultimately I play on my xbox, so is there any command that could completely lock a skill level in place so it won't level up no matter how much it's used?

If there is such a command, would it stay put after transferring to an xbox?

I do not think there is. I cannot think of a practical use for such a function.

Why would you want that?

I suspect that the only way to stop any skill levelling would be to first artificially raise it to 100 and then use the modav command to apply a
negative value to bring it back to the level you wanted to keep. It would always show in red that it was being damaged somehow.

As far as transferring it to xbox, no idea. IF you can transfer a saved game, then maybe it would go, but no way to know if the skill would
stay raised and lowered again without experiment.

Being a PC user, I was under the impression that you couldn't do stuff like this EXCEPT on the PC. Can you really transfer a saved game
back and forth??? It would certainly give non-PC players a chance to get their broken quests fixed, if they could copy a broken save to a
PC, fix it, then copy the fixed save back again. Might even create an industry.

PS: why would you want your skill permanently stuck?

Yes, you can switch saves between consoles. All Beth games have that capability. And yes, I've used it to fix bugged quests and such.

And That would work Thin, but not in this case for reasons I'll explain next.

I want to lock in a level because I am a fan of "maxed" or "pure" characters, and this type of character I hope to build only needs 50/70 Archery and no more. I'll be using Archery, but I don't want to level it cause that'll raise my overall level, which is something I wish to avoid.

Chop wood. Chop lots of wood. Drink mead. Go to sleep. Get up. Chop more wood. Chop a lot more wood. Drink a lot more mead. Go to sleep. Be a good Nord. See? Your level progress slows way way down.

Are the file formats the same, so that a saved game from PC would work on an xbox?? If so, and if you can actually move them back and forth,
then my suggestion ought to do the trick, assuming that 1) it stays in effect, and 2) it doesn't bother you to have a permanently degraded skill.

I know that the setav command is NOT permanent, as it goes away as soon as a save is reloaded (a carryweight boost goes poof if you reload
to keep your idiot follower from dying for instance, even though the boost was from prior to entering the dungeon). I'll have to check to see what
modav and forceav do.

One reason might be because some enemies get harder when you hit higher levels and the quality of the loot changes.

3-4 skills to 100, some others 70-80.

Only stick to max skills..

This is how I stayed in my 40s for so long. I level up from the occasional use of lock picking and sneaking.

Lower the difficulty.

Wouldn't that work the wrong way, making it easier to level instead of harder?

No, the faster you kill, the less your skills have time to be "honed" (if you will).

Sometimes I go down from master or expert into adept and see the progression difference. I've stuck on lvl 42 on the latest character for awhile.

I understand this problem. One thing you can do is be careful about skill books from skills you plan to neglect. You can delay a couple Tertiary skill gain levels that way.

Lowering the difficulty isn't really the solution. It just takes away the challenge when everything is so much weaker.
