Anyone else kind of miss Morrowind's journal?

Not for it's horrendous organisation (and it was), but more for the little bits of personality it added here and there. Like if you read the journal you'll see your char write about how bad a drunk Breton bounty hunter smells, or how foolish a girl who fell in love with a bandit who robbed her is, or how boring tasks for Caius Cosades are.

I also always liked being Nerevarine, Bloodskal, an incredibly powerful god-killer, immortal and untouchable by any sentient being, but still having my little red journal with it's hundreds of pages. It was kind of like the iron shield I couldn't get rid of on my warrior character, just cus it had saved my life with a perfectly timed block countless times, and I ended up still using it end game instead of eleidon's ward or a daedric tower shield.

I would really like an updated version of the journal for TES 6 with a better quest menu and topics, I don't even check the Skyrim or Oblivion journals (if you can call them that anymore :S) in the quest menus. Anyone else miss Morrowind's little journal?

If it would been slightly improved so my character kept all notes on one mission at one place it would be nice IMO.

I adored Morrowind's journal, despite horrendous organization. Even Oblivion's was good, keeping track of quests, even the details. It's since been stripped in Skyrim.

Skyrim's Journal is, in my opinion, its weakest feature.

It does seem journals have been replaced by a check list. Ah well, time for some of that 'make believe style of role playing' to fill in the gaps.

Skyrim seems to be moving further away from a single journal towards many journals that now can, and have to, be found in the world. Many quest details are in those journals that NPCs either leave behind or carry with them. It is now possible to pick-pocket a journal out of an NPC and thereby trigger a quest! I love this.

No more one all knowing journal, but the journal is becoming a part of the game world itself - items to be played with.

It is innovative and I hope to see more of these journals in the future.

Too bad most do not get this and only complain about quest markers and how the old times were better.

I really like Morrowind's journal. Even though you're right in the bad organization, it still felt like your character was keeping a real journal. Writing down information as he or she acquired it. Oblivion's wasn't too bad. Skyrim's is a quest log, not a journal, IMO.

I literally LOATHE the Journal in Skyrim. It was just a completely horribly implemented cop out. They wrote a guide for the game...they should be able to put some of that information into the Journal so I do not NEED quest markers. Quest markers as the only option is just lazy development imo and nothing can change that opinion.

Yes, I loved the journal in Morrowind, it did a decent job of telling your story as you progressed through the game. With Tribunal they enhanced it so you could optionaly follow the journal by quest, that was a godsend to those of us that kept sidetracking a lot.

I was always fond of imagining my character pausing in the middle of battles or right after opening doors to quickly write down that "so-and-so is dead" before continuing.

I really enjoyed the journal from Morrowind as well. Not to say that I think quest markers should be removed, but being able to toggle them on or off, as well as a journal containing proper amounts of information would be amazing.

Heck yes for Morrowind's journal! With the organizing function added by Tribunal, that is.

From the in-character point of view... I don't even know what Skyrim's map and journal are supposed to be. A futuristic hologram Digitals device from the 5th Era? Their color and graphical themes are very different from the game world and don't seem to belong in that world at all. "Journal's" text is also impersonal, as if not written by the PC at all. And it isn't. It's like some higher force told the PC exactly what needs to be done, and flawlessly lights him/her the path. With nothing extra. In one term, those have become a hand-holding gameplay mechanic. They don't try to be anything else anymore, like an actual map or an actual journal. They're mechanics. That's sad, man. :/

MW's journal did feel like a real journal. And although there was no organization, I always knew where the info was generally, as in 7 pages back or 20, or that I talked to the guy before going to this town or that dungeon...

Skyrim's journal is pretty useless except for placing quest markers which are essential considering the lack of any directional information.
