Anyone else think we need a new engine?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 2:30 pm

Still using the Ole' engine invisible walls, bad textures, simple weapon models, terrible animation, and frame rate issues.

The graphics don't change my opinion of the game (or any game) but come on we needed an update engine after F3 I can't stand the third person animation where my character just glides against the floor and doesn't look right. What is the point of customizing the appearance of your character if they just look and feel like crap.

Please don't troll me I just want to hear what everyone else has to say.

I thought everyone wanted a new engine after Oblivion...It was showing it's age then.

Hopefully Bethesda will use Id Softwares' IdTech 5 engine that powers 'Rage' - I would love to see 'Fallout 3' remake using this engine. 'Fallout 4' or 'TES V' would be nice too.

Bethesda wouldn't use the latest 'Unreal' engine would they?

Beth said they made a new engine for their next game.

About IdTech 5 that would be nice but, I don't think that they will use it. Please Beth prove me wrong.

I think everyone agrees with you, including Bethesda Game Studios.

There should be either a new engine or a radically modified one for ES5.

They said the next game is going to use a further modified Gamebryo IIRC. So looks like they aren't going to be swapping out anything soon.

Oblivion actually looked better than FO3 and NV. HDR looked as it should unlike in Fallout. Textures were well done and crisp. Horizons blended in with the ground nicely. In Fallout it looked broken.

Amazing how many people don't know about this, considering it is a couple of months old.

Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard explained in a separate interview with IGN that his game would not use id Tech 5. The studio's new engine built for its upcoming title is more beneficial to creating huge, open-world games, such as Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, while id Tech 5 is better for more contained environments.

Here is a quote from IGN,
In an interview with IGN at Quakecon in August, Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard confirmed the developer's new, and still unannounced, title would not be using id Software's Rage engine, id Tech 5. Instead, Bethesda has created an entirely new game engine.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the post above mine.

I don't mind the engine at all as it is. They could do better animations for it though.

While I loved Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, if Fallout 4 is like them I probably wouldn't buy it. Will definitely need a new engine and feel or it would be the same old thing in a new setting. Considering it will be down the road a bit, I'm guessing it will be something completely new and different.

Could we go back to the old one that FO1/FO2 used? :)

For the release this close to Fallout 3 it was probably a smart choice to fall back on the same engine. No doubt it contributed to getting it out in a decent time frame. I'm sure the next one is in for a bit of an upgrade.

Sorry havent played NV but it uses same engine as fallout 3.
Ive played a lot of other games and Beth is doing just fine with their engine, at some point there may be a new engine like the change from morrowind to oblivion.

I read post like this I cant see were people like this are comming from? What game would you like fall out to be like? You want crysis detail, CoD characters, Halo animations, what is it, what are you reaching for? PLease dont tell me you want the old fall out engine.

I'm pretty sure that New Vegas was made to buy time until they can make a new Fallout game with the new engine and to make changes to the game so they can find out what exactly people like and don't like about the game. I personally hope that Fallout 4 doesn't come out for another 2 years so that it will have very little flaws.

Riven was Pre-rendered CGI, the "graphics" were meaningless, you could have played it on a DVD player.

We don't need a new engine what we really need is less bugs and glitches in the current engine. Basically if Bethesda needs to delay the game a month or two to reduce the bugs and glitches by 50 % or more then sure do it.

Bogus. The game used QT movies ( so what  )
It was a game, it was good looking, and it was the best looking game when it came out. ~Exile was not however.

(Although.... I'd concede that it was only the best looking PC game at the time ~I've never owned a console, and would not be able to judge from experience).

The company that developed and sells Gamebryo is in bankruptcy. I assume Bethesda has a source code license and probably has some contractual agreement to take ownership of the source code for their own internal use if such a situation occured. It would be pretty cool if they bought Gamebryo for peanuts and made it open source.

Meh. It's not important to me. They could do with fixing some of the bugs in this engine, but as long as the game world and story are interesting, I'm fine with the Gamebryo engine.

I wouldn't be against a new engine, but it's pretty low on my list of concerns.
