Anyone kind of let down there weren't Berserkers, Reavers, o

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:08 am

I know that there were Berserkers on the island of Solstheim (playable through Morrowind's Bloodmoon expansion pack), as well as Reavers (light armed Nord raiders), and Fryse hags that were basically female Nordic sorcerers scattered throughout. I thought these enemies added a very Nordic touch to the island, having unique names and descriptions. Strangely, they aren't in Skyrim itself. I would have figured that Skyrim being the hub of Nordic culture, that berserkers, reavers, and Fryse hags would exist to some degree, even though has largely been integrated with the Empire's more civilized culture.

I don't know why exactly, but the Nords of Skyrim strike me as more civilized compared to the inhabitants of Solstheim, the former resembling more of the Scandinavian nations during the Middle Ages, while the latter group remind me more of the ancient Germanic tribes and Vikings during their prime. I'm aware that Solstheim was supposed to represent Nords that were culturally more primitive compared to their mainland relatives, but even if there are Nordic bandits in Skyrim, they're just termed regular bandits, just as any Imperial, Dark Elf, or Argonian would be. Why did Bethesda not add in very Nord-culture specific units like the reavers and the rest mentioned above?

Yes I was let down that they didn't bring back a lot of things that were in Bloodmoon. Also, where the hell are all the damn mead halls? Jorvaskar and the Hall of Valor don't count as far as I'm concerned. I wanted to see mead halls out in the harsh cold wilderness like Thirsk.

Well, I recall two mead halls, I think one near Whiterun, and one in Riften. That's not including the taverns that are already in every town. Two mead halls doesn't sound like a lot though.

Also, Bloodmoon had a lot of interesting traditional Nord armor and clothing that could have been integrated into Skyrim. I'm not asking for direct copies of them, but the possibility of Bethesda adding more Nord culture specific clothes, weapons, and armor types. Play up the Nord thing while you can, we're in Skyrim after all.

Taverns are essentially mead halls, in which there are many. The mead hall of solstheim (i only remember one) was centered around a leader/local government of some sort. With Jarls and large towns, there is no local warlords or whatever.

I know that there are Vampires in Skyrim, but I'm kind of disappointed that there are none of the Vampires I read about that haunt cold places like Skyrim and Solsthiem. The ones that live under lakes and reach up and drag you down through the ice. it was in several lore books in Morrowind. Don't remember what they were called though :-(

Oh, I think they were called the Volkihar vampires. I agree, they would have been, in addition to the normal vampires, a unique variety of the cold conditions to the north.

I think berserkers usually fought out there solo. They were basically madmen, fanatics of war, caught in a rage for blood. You just don't see these guys in Skyrim, although I don't doubt that there are warriors with berserker type attitudes in the heat of battle as it already is.

Was it werebears or wereboars that existed before, in Daggerfall? I'm confused as to which it was, but I never did become one.

Wereboars were the second type of lycanthrope in Daggerfall. I have never had a character become a wereboar either.

Skyrim is supposed to be lousy with wearbears, and the sea of ghosts apparently contained the odd wearshark. Hush now, though; they never existed! Streamlined into Oblivion

Oh, weresharks, I forgot all about those. I think I remember reading about them in a book, so they are supposed to be a part of lore. It's things like this that make me wonder if Bethesda ever regrets adding certain things to the lore, especially things that they didn't add to begin with.

Also, weren't the Reavers in Solstheim supposed to be not from the island, but somewhere else? Were they from Skyrim?
