Anyone liked the College of Winterhold quest?

Because i find the questline totally ridiculous.

The questline makes you feel like some impending Armageddon is coming; Some Psijic mage stopping time (or whatever he did, seems like complex magic anyway) in saarthal to warn you of danger; a trip to this mysterious Augur of Dunlain for more clarification on the danger, etc.

All this, to tell me that Ancano is dangerous? I pretty much figured that out for myself :glare: thanks a lot.

the quest line is broken for me...the next quest doesnt trigger and the people responsible have normal dialogue. This major bug svcks major dike as i'm using my mage but cant become the best mage as you need to finish the college quest to learn some spells

Oh don't forget the fact you became arch mage after that quest. not having to use any magic skills whatsoever. Which doesn't make much sense because 1 ingame week before that you were just attending the college.

And, oh yeah, the Psijics take they eye without you ever learning anything about it or getting any sort of permanent "blessing" type enhancement from it or anything, and you're left wondering why they didn't just take it right from the start? I mean, if they could take it at the end, why not take it at the beginning? Also, you get a quest reward which is supposedly the most powerful staff enchanted by a legendary mage-god, but it completely svcks and is almost useless outside the main quest.

I've enjoyed Skryim, but the College quest line makes me want to kick someone at Bethesda in the nuts.

With regards to not really even needing to use magic to become the Archmage, the Oblivion questline was sort of the same way (although, at *least* in one of the quests in Oblvion, you had to use magic to solve a puzzle, although they gave you spell scrolls in a chest right next to the puzzle, so, uhh, yeah.) I really, really hoped the writers/designers would have listened to all the complaints about that lack of attainment in the Oblivion mages guild arc, and correct that problem in Skryim, but no, all you have to do is show you can cast magelight, a low-level spell which is essentially useless except for getting into the college.

I actually really enjoyed it on the wrong character and have come back to do it again on my mage. I'm a PC player who refuses mods, so I'm having to console out of the biggest puzzle in the chain, and it's still awesome. (for those who aren't aware, some of us can't see the blue lines on any graphics settings so we can't adjust the crystal - also have no help from clarvoyance)

on the elite mages... they DO make you the Arch Mage, and that does come with fully replenishing stuffs in the room and quarters if you've chosen not to be married for 100g a day from someone who is quickly repetitive and... well... a little annoying over time. I'd hoped for some new special magic or an invite to join them... oh well. all things in time, right?

I enjoyed the College quest line, but I didn't like the way it ended, with you being the Arch Mage. It just felt wrong to me; it was like J.K. Rowling decided to make Harry Potter the new Headmaster of Hogwarts after he defeated Voldemort. And besides, how are you supposed to be Arch Mage when you're going to be running around Skyrim doing everything but running the college?

I'm actually thinking about making a mod that will fix that once the CK comes out next month. I've never modded for TES before, and my mod making experience for the Fallouts was very limited, so I don't even know if it's possible. But it could be a good way to learn some modding skills, and if it fixes this part of the game for me, so much the better.

I don't think anyone really thought the College quest was done well from start to finish. I was sort of into it when I started it, but it fell really flat in the end. The "bad guy" was WAY too obvious and cliche, it was too short, it had the Deux Ex Machina "we'll just come in and take the eye away magically and save everything and never be seen again" Psijic monks, and yes, becoming Arch Mage in so short a time with no skill in magic requirement is just stupid.

Whoever designed it, and Master spells, needs to be kicked in the nuts.

i really thought there was going to be some major magic anomaly happening or something. Turns out all that hooha was caused by a single high elf. 1 high elf > college of winterhold
No wonder the thalmor owned the empire for most of the war :glare:

I loved the way the questline started. Everything was introduced nicely, orientation was interesting and your first class actually teaches you something. The field trip to Saarthal is awesome too. There's lots of unknown and anticipation. Why is everything so different in Saarthal? What is the orb? Where does it come from? Why was it sealed? What do the Psijics want with my character?

Unfortunately, absolutely none of these questions are answered, despite being brought up numerous times by various NPCs.

Hell, through much of the second-half of th storyline, Ancano seems to know more about the orb than you. How? For that matter, what does he want with it? And are his motivations personal? Or is he simply acing on Thalmor orders? Actually, don't the Thalmor have any opinion on Ancano's murder? Really, what's the point of making Ancano Thalmor at all if you're not going to use that fact? He could be any power-hungry mage. His motivations aren't expanded upon whatsoever.

There's so much potential in the College's storyline. The Eye of Magnus could be a new Heart of Lorkhan-type artifact: something that could change the world, and how its peoples view themselves forever. The workings of the Thalmor could be expanded upon. High Elven society could be expanded upon. Various Psijic mysteries could be addressed and deepened or solved. It's the wasted potential that really gets to me.

Didn't enjoy it one bit. My second character is even more magic orientated and at the moment I have not even the slightest of interest in doing them again.

It's not just the quest line IMO. Even the setting/building and what not is boring. The place felt empty and aimless. Getting to the mages guild in Morrowind for example... 10 times better. If not more.

The designers/writers who are responsible for the quest line should be ashamed of themselves. There, I said it.
