One thing that I did find is if I walk slow in the game it crashes less. The auto setup said my system could run everything at high mode but I have even tried lowering things down to medium as well as a lower screen size. There is no issues with any other games or programs. This is actually a fairly fresh W7 load as I just redid the pc with Windows 7 a few months ago. I ran DXDIAG and the data is supplied below. I even tried running Fallout with antivirus disabled (a suggestion on another posting) with ni luck. No other programs running other than standard windoz stuff. No backups running, no viruses or malware, just a clean machine.

I'm at level 30 with Boone and the dog as companions. If I get into a busy area or run into a scene it seems to crash there more often, though I have seen it crash as I walk into an area. I've tried different saves with no luck. Since it sounds like a graphics building issue that's when I tried lowering the resolution and screen size settings. But now I can't play it for more than 5-10 minutes unless I crawl in hidden mode. My video card is a GTX 260 with 896MB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 which seems more than high enough over the minimum system requirements. My DirectX ver is 11.

Why are you still using drivers from a year and a half ago? You don't think Microsoft keeps those up to date for you automatically, do you? Get them from the source, not from Windows Update, not from the manufacturer of the machine, always from the SOURCE. And I know that there have been updates in September and in October, 2010, and probably since then, so get to it.

My NVIDIA drivers are current - the only upgrade from the manufacturer was to add in 3D capability... the driver I am using is only a few months old.

As far as the other drivers - My mother board has bios updates and I will not attempt that as the updates are just for different chipsets, none of which have anything to do with my CPU.

Drivers such as the PS/2, USB, and all the other 2009 ones are as per my motherboard and have nothing to do with the game. The only issue of old drivers would be the video and audo... the video is a few months old and the audio, though it's from 2009, is current except for the surround sound players the manufacturer is offering through the update.

You should get the latest video card driver from nvidia. DO a clean install (there is a checkbox in the installation wizard)

You could try a clean re-install of fallout 3 nv. Use add/remove programs and delete the fallout 3 nv folder in the steam folder.

Make sure to ruun everything "as admin".

I did both the video and audio drivers this afternoon, despite the NVIDIA not really changing much. I also did a clean install of both drivers... this si where it completly removes the old data and then installs from scratch. The game played but in a much smaller window (this was due to me lowering the game's screen settings earlier on) so I ran the games default settings and tried again.

It played for several minutes fine and than crashed. I'll try and do a clean install once again on the game.

have you tried starting falloutnv.exe in windows XP SP 3 Compatibility mode.. Solved the crash problem for me....

Thank you for the suggestion but I tried that last night as per another website that was hoping to find solutions for people who had issues with NVIDIA cards and Fallout New Vegas. I changed both exe files to XP SP3 mode and still experienced random crashes. I even went into the game's options and tried turning off antialiasing, shadows, filtering, etc., all with no real luck in solving the issue.

Are you running mods?

Thanks - I checked my C++ and it was the same rev, but I selected it and did a repair "just in case".

No mods - this is the original game as per install. Tried a clean install as well.

No background garbage running. I'm the guy that everyone comes to when their PC gets virused so I know all the processes running and even use hijackthis every now and then to look for hidden ones. I've even tried disabling things like my anti-virus during game play as some people reported issues with this.

I have not tired the codec reset util that you provided ... that looks pretty hardcoe and I have not installed any 3rd party codecs on this machine yet. This motherboard is an Asus Max II so it's designed for gaming. I was going to run my old benchmark program but I can't find the CD. I see where Windows 7 has that computer performance hooha where it rates all of the computer's key components with teh highest rating being a 7.9.

My processor & RAM both rate at 7.1, the graphics and gaming graphics both rate at 7.2.

I think I'll try calling tech support tomorrow. I just hope their tech support is not going to be like the "Peggy" dude we see in those Discover Financials commercials.

Update - well, the more I read on other sites the more I see it's an NVIDIA compatibility problem.
