Apple: Competition is "Not Cool"

Post » Tue Jul 12, 2011 9:01 pm

Looks like Apple doesn't like how much competition they are getting from Android. http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/02/apple-sues-htc-for-infringing-20-iphone-patents/, http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/18/apple-sues-samsung-over-for-copying-the-iphone-and-ipad/, then they felt that they really needed to http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/24/apple-sues-samsung-again-for-copying-the-iphones-design-this-t/, and then finally decided that it was unfair to HTC to only sue them once if they are suing Samsung twice, http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/11/apple-files-second-itc-patent-infringement-complaint-against-htc/. http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/07/apple-files-itc-request-to-block-import-of-select-samsung-device/.

Looks like Nokia was right for going with Windows Phone 7 instead of Android, that way they can slowly die of lack of sales instead of being strangled by lawsuits :P

I guess Apple never learned that "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". Do any of those lawsuits have basis in fact, or is this "copyright infringement" just based on aesthetics?

I've not looked at the patent claims for HTC, but the Samsung lawsuits are purely aesthetic.

Hey, at least Amazon got away with their appstore :P, shame Samsung's counter-suit on Apple didn't end up working. It's stupid that Samsung is being forced to show Apple their planned phones, but Apple doesn't have to reciprocate.

Microsoft has nothing to do with this

In fact, Microsoft loooooves Android. Microsoft makes many times more money on Android than they do Windows Phone 7 :P

Most publicly-traded corporations will do whatever it takes to make money and maintain good market position. It has nothing to do with "good" or "evil." MS and Apple just happen to be good at it and have the money to take risks with their public image. Publicly-traded companies don't exist to spread flower petals around and make the world a better place. I mean, who would invest in that? :P

If only they'd used the money they got from Apple (can't remember any details about that case, except that Nokia came out on top) to get Meego ready for a mass rollout...

Most, but not all. I think people just wish that more tech companies would behave like Google instead of Apple. I can say that what Apple is doing is in pretty bad taste. They're suing Samsung for the simple "look and feel" of their phones through the assertion that they are the only company permitted to use a sorted grid of icons and black borders. I'd say Samsung has made a bad business move as well when they attempted to copy the look of the iPhone/iPad, but it's a pretty ridiculous notion to be sued for.

I have not heard about Apple's recent lawsuit against HTC though. I'm hesitant to sympathize with HTC because I don't know what exactly Apple is suing them over.

On the semi-bright side, not even Apple is immune to patent trolling. They recently lost a lawsuit for the implementation of playlists in iPods.
