Applying poison....

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:47 am

In my current run I have a melee survivalist with a starting strength of 7. I wanted to be able to throw knives over a distance and I wanted these knives to be poisoned, once I have the survival skill high enough.

When I equip a throwing knife and apply the poison, the window pops up, asking "do you want to poison xxx-knife?"
Now, in my opinion it won't make sense to just poison a single throwing knife. I'd rather thought, I will poison the entire stack.

Questions:
1) I've read a lot in the forum here and there are contradictory posts about that. Some say, they can even poison bullets, others say, it's only possible to poison a melee weapon. What is correct?
2) Are throwing weapons without poison something to consider or are they worthless compared to a silenced sniper rifle?

1) I can only poison melee/unarmed weapon so far, but it is possible some guns have poison tag on them.
2) Short answer, yes, even against La Longue Carabine and Ratslayer. Long answer, why do you need to poison something that's dead?

You are right - if I meet *most* things with the appropriate level.

But there is always the occasional death claw and some other beasts which are quite hard to kill, when encountered too early.

Nevertheless, I want to try it.

New question: How can I see that a weapon is poisoned?

Example:
Currently I have a custom sword called "Yatagan" from a mod. It's stats are DAM 46 and DPS 123. I use poison on it, the window pops up "you really want to poison the Yatagan?", I click ok and one sample of poison is used.
But the stats of the weapon are still the same. Any idea?

There is nothing other than your memory,

I haven't met any occasional deathclaw yet, but throwing weapons wouldn't help either...you best bet are drugs.

As long as you stay within a cell of 93 I don't think there is any dangerous beast.

Ok, thanks for advices. But I neither asked how to kill certain beasts nor do I have problems to kill everything this game. :talk:

If I need it or not, I'm interested in these poisons and how to put them to use. SOMEONE should have tried before, right? <_<

If you're not sure if a weapon is poisoned, simply try to apply a poison to it again; it won't do it again if it was already poisoned. It'll say, weapon is already poisoned. Also, if you miss your thrown weapon that is poisoned, the poison doesn't get used; your next shot is automatically poisoned. Nice, if not realistic.

I too hoped to poison all of my throwing knives, but we just can't.

Where did you get your throwing knives from!! There is a topic about this, and they seem to be as rare as mini-nukes.

I believe there is a type of poison called Treble that requires an extremely high level survivor skill to make. It causes an enemy to loose -50 skill points to all their weapon offensive skills (guns, energy weapons, explosives, and melee) It really doesn't do much in the way of actually damaging people but its very amusing to see how the enemy reacts after getting poisoned. A lot of times their attacks end up missing by miles.

Bleak Venom I think does the most damage. It requires the same ingredients as a lot of other poisons (which I find strange, why don't they require different stuff?), and level 50 Survival. It does 15 dmg per second for 10 seconds. I put this on my throwing knife. Since I only have a dozen t.knives (have yet to find any more than that) I either save, use them for fun and reload, or I save them for special occasions. I'm playing a female assassin-type (not sniper necessarily, though she can do that), and a poisoned t.knife has great flavor, so to speak. example,

Spoiler???:

the Contreras side quest, I had the option to kill the NCR agent/trooper at the pawn shop, so of course my character was fine with that. I used one of my precious knives there - just hid by a shelf, threw it at his head, did a lot of damage at first, he stood up, said "hey wait-a-minute" then fell over dead. Totally worth it, and cooler than killing yet another person with a silenced 10mm.

Even if I dragged his body over to a chair afterward, and posed him on it, and balanced a toaster on his head?

(can you poison a fist? probably brass knuckles)

IIRC the guy at Crimson's sells some plus throwingaxes. But you are right: That's not enough if you want to use that kind of weapon. I use a mod which grants some shuriken and throwingdaggers as well as the recipes to craft the stuff. I've seen a new mod, which enables you to break down butterknives, generic knives etc. to craft thowingknives. The latter is IMO the more serious one, 'cause the stuff you can craft is not hopelessly OP.

Now I tried it the first time with throwing knives. It was there, where Ranger Moralez' body is to recover. The fiends are on top of the roof, which is quite bad for my knife-melee chick. So I used the throwing stuff.
Really, I was amazed. In all my games before I just brought Boone and ED-E and let them shoot the fiends off, 'cause I hardly play a gun or pistol type. Once I used a sniper rifle with a skill of 60 and wasted lots of ammo.
But this time it was just cake. Two or three knives or even only one when I scored a critical per fiend.

I can't understand it, as there is no throwing skill in particular. Nevertheless, in VATS I had percentages between 75 and 95 from a long distance, whereas I had less than 50 with the sniper rifle. Is it just my 8 AGI and / or my 8 STR?
Or is the entire throwing stuff hopelessly OP?

BTW, I do not have the "Heave HO!" perk.
