Aracnophobia

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 5:28 am

I wanted to share this: I am Aracnophobic. A man who runs away from spiders and gets horrified with any 8 legged insects. Specially giant ones......

Sometimes I am exploring dungeons and face frostbite spiders and giant frostbite spiders. It's unbeliveable how annoyed I get.

Many times I abandoned exploring dungeons fulfilled with spiders and used the console "disable" command for simply erase the spider.

But of course it's not always that I get in despair and use Flame spells as I run away and scream "Fuching spider!! SPIDER SPIDER SPIDER!!! AWAY FORM ME!".

I want to know: Somebody else has this kind of problem?

It's sad but is funny! xD

That i believe is a personal problem maybe when the construction set comes out i could replace the spiders with something like snakes....but then people would complain about the snakes.....

That's a personal problem indeed. I am not complaining.

I am just curious if nobody else has this KIND of problem. I mean.. Get annoyed with any creature, not exactly a phobia. Just pretty annoyed.

Arachnophobia is one of the most common fears in the world, and it's been expressed hundreds of times on these forums. Despite this, spiders remain a constant enemy throughout video games. I think it's really interesting that a fear like this can manifest even in a video game, as I don't think it applies to the majority of other phobias. Even Spider Daedra were a problem in Oblivion, and they weren't even really spiders.

Curious. Didn't know this is that common.

Do you really think other phobias, claustrophobia and others does not manifest in video games? That's a interesting point to discuss.

Yeah, I share that Arachnophobia problem, but my solution is usually more crushing them with the next best object I can find.
They arent Insects though, but Arachnoids, its a seperate category for creepers with eight legs.
In the game I reanimated a Giant Frostbite Spider which then followed me around, even warping through narrow passages beeing directly in my face.
That really made me shiver for a sec even though my phobia isnt as strong as that of others, just gives me the creeps when I have them (the fat ones, not the all leggy ones) sitting on me or stuff like that.

I am not alone. We share the same fears... xD

But seems the arachnoids bothers you less than me. I totally numbed with the first Giant Frostbite Spider I found in the game. The spider killed me because I just could not hit it!! My despair was enough for making me avoid meleeing the creature.

--> The High Elf

Yeah, but I do not like him. He asked me in marriage. And.. I play a male character. Annoying, but I fear most the spiders.

You could replace them with Stuffed animals.

Maybe replace with barrels, sparrows, trees... anything but spiders.

There's a mod for this already. Replaces all the spiders with bears. Also replaces the spider at the loading screen, and there's another mod to remove all spider webs.

As an arachnophobic myself I have a few ideas that might help unless you suffer from truly severe phobia.

Sneak attacks with a bow can help you weed out the small spiders from a distance, you can clear out an entire hive this way without engaging in melee unless you have a horrid archery skill.

If you go melee, fight in 3rd person view and just focus your eyes on your character and his/her movements rather than the spider. Then slash away until it dies.

Unless you have to pick up a quest item, just hurry along and get through the spider sections as fast you can/want/need.

You might also want to disable the killcam if you feel uncomfortable with the risk of close-ups of the spiders.

I have a fear of heights, yet I enjoy jumping from great heights in video games, and even when I'm trying my best not to fall, I still feel no real "fear" toward it. I've also never heard of any other fear manifesting in a video game. I'm sure there are some, but I'd say it's a big minority.

I have the same problem. I'm terrified of spiders. Yesterday I found a cave with spider webs outside it and these MASSIVE egg sacs and I could hardly bring myself to even look at it. I decided to go in anyways and I always use a bow to sneak kill spiders from as far away as possible.. So I sneak killed this small one, which alerted like ten spiders who came crawling over with their squishy sounding crawl to investigate the body. There were SO MANY SPIDERS! and several of the giant ones.. I quickly ran out of the cave after that :/

This game grants you the opportunity to wack your fear in the face with a giant hammer. Seize it.

I'm actually more scared of Falmer dungeons especially with all those inscetoid creatures running around, as they tend to gang up on me with their poisonous bites and their slashing claws, Not even a fire atronach can stand up to them!

There are also two other enemies I'm anticipating with a tinge of fear.
Hagravens-I have a feeling they'll have a horrible shrieking sound that will probably startle me by surprise.
Steam Centurions- Those things look so powerful, like unstoppable forces, will any of my attacks be effective against it? Will my frost antronach be able to stand up to it?

I don't have arachnophobia but I get highly annoyed by those spiders mainly because they are BIG, (seen giant one too). Tend to run away from them if possible. I share the fear with OP. :)

@Odohviing, OMG! I hope i don't encounter that cave. ><* I couldn't stand it.

Fus Ra Da is a great shout to use on spiders as it sends them flying back, their legs waving uselessly in the air, leaving them open for a huge power attack.

To OP: I too have a distinct dislike for spiders, but it isn't fear as much as an unstoppable urge to kill the creepy bastards. So living spiders gives me the creeps, but as soon as they are dead I'm cool with their presence.
Is it also spiderlike beings, such as the Dwemer workers that crawl on 8 legs (i think it's 8)?

I have the phobia to. Usually my body tightens and I can't complete the dungeon or ask someone else to do it but I started realising that if I release my rage on them for being in the game, I actually kill them without fear. I really don't get but it sign for me that I can get over this stupid fear of mine and kill them with flame spell :flamethrower: or a good sword. Ether option is fine.
