Archer equivalent of a power attack?

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 6:35 pm

I know Archery has no direct equivalent to a power attack, but is there some mechanic that pushes it's damage in a similar manner to melee weapons?

Stamina is basically free if you plan for it (enchanting, potions, or restoration perks), therefore melee damage might as well be counted double.

My observation and testing would seem to indicate that Archery has no power attack damage multiplier equivalent, and it's just considered a normal "swing".

I'm not complaining, it's just a observation I've made playing two different characters. The Archery character cleans up easier mobs no issue, but my two hander can crunch tougher mobs (albeit at a somewhat higher risk) with a lot less trouble. I think the difference is in power attacks (and the stagger). These observations are for Master difficulty btw.

Bump.

Feel like I framed the title of my post wrong, wish I could edit it.

I'm just trying to see if I missed anything when looking at the damage multipliers available to each combat type. Melee has the most, at a cost (stamina).

Archer power attacks are sneak attacks as they are far easier to pull off then melee sneak attacks and escape detection to pull off another sneak attack.

And before you say anything, remember that magic has neither power attacks nor sneak attacks.

You can only pull the string that far back.

Bows have the benefit of range, ranged sneak attacks and "bullet time" with steady hands. It's plenty of advantages.

No, no, nothing to say. The answer is appreciated and I can agree that sneak attacks can make up for it. That's how I am currently approaching it myself.

Assuming you take Sneak attacks out of the picture though, I can assume I haven't missed anything mechanically then and my observation is correct. In a straight up slug fest, melee has the most damage multipliers.

EDIT:

Can't emphasize enough that I'm just trying to understand the mechanics and not trying to show that one is better then the other.

Criticals are pretty massive but you have no control over them. Stagger likewise.

It seems like the trade-off is that Two-Handed has the best damage but the worst defense.

i was kindof expecting there to be some cool bullet-time effects on 1-hit kill arrows.
