Archery is clearly broken atm. What about Magic?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:57 pm

Hey there. I played Skyrim around 5 months ago and I had loads of fun! Played an Stealth Archer Wood Elf.
Yesterday I installed Skyrim fresh updated to 1.5. Started Archer and immediately noticed that is broken. Bow make insane dmg which ruins the experience overall. So I gave up playing archer and I am thinking of making a stealth mage type of char.
But I remember when I played 5 months ago ppl where complaining about Magic, especially Destruction, the dmg was way to low in higher levels resulting in really weak character if played pure Destruction builds.

So my question is, how's Destruction now? Did it got fixed? Can I play pyre stealth - Destruction mage type of char and have fun as I did with my archer?

And what do you think, when will they hotfix the archery dmg?

thanks!

I don't think it's been touched.

Destruction damage is fine if you utilize potions. Still nowhere near as high as melee/archery damage with enchanting/potions, but still enough to easily blow through anything.

I thought it was just an UI issue, it reports higher damage but the actual damage done isn't affected?

Magic is fine in the game, but never to the level or variety present in Morrowind; you have to make do with the repetoire you have, which isn't much at least compared to high-magic worlds (Skyrim clearly isn't). I can safely say that perks like Impact and Augmented Elemental damage are useful, and I expect even more so at lower difficulty levels. Enchanting is easy to level, Alchemy isn't (I expect it's a skill you'd want as a thief). In short magic is fine, as long as you have at least some experience of how to play a mage (not just using destruction, but learning to Turn Dreugr, Paralysis, Fury etc..), though there isn't as much variety as in previous games.

Sneak archery has always been broken. I haven't noticed any increased bow damage since 1.5 but I always use a long bow even at high levels so maybe it's a problem with certain bows.

You can't use destruction alone. Use it along with conjuration and you'll be fine

Destruction damage isn't the real problem, spell cost/damage is the problem. You can dish out 200+ damage with instant stun and instant hit(no projectile lag) fairly easily, and repeat quickly. Problem is doing so will svck up hundreds of magicka very quickly.

Lowering your spell cost is the key. A few items with 25% cost reduction and you are fine. Also of course combine it with other schools... like conjuration.

On that note I don't think archery was changed. It was always pretty powerful if played right. Currently doing a mage/archer, and haven't gotten to the point where archery is really powerful(no sneak x3 crit, still using long bow, and not many perks) so playing on master DID it is pretty difficult.

Archery has always been a very powerful attack ,think about it though it's an Arrow threw the head it should deal insane damage.

It has, i dont know why people are posting that it is the same.

Test it by equipping a bow on inventory screen. Equip iron arrows, then equip a higher damage arrow (dwarven lets say) the damage doesnt just go up by 4 in this example, it goes much higher.

Archery's always done a lot of damage especially if you focus on the Percent perks and the Sneak perks. There are far more pressing problems that need to be solved with 1.6 besides Archery and Destruction.

Archery has indeed been borked in v1.5. The way arrow damage is added to bow damage was messed with. There's a thread around here somewhere with a really good description including hard numbers.

That isn't the worst of it, though. Simply drawing your bow can cause enemies to topple over like those fainting goats on YouTube. It's some kind of bug with the master archery perk. Then there's the wonky killcams... the ones that make you miss your target.

It's sad because this game had one of the best archery implementations of any game I have played. We'll see if they fix it in 1.6.

Destruction damage is still very low, making the higher difficulties frustrating without using other magic schools or crafting skills to help compensate for the lack of damage.

It's a display bug. The actual damage has not been changed. You can test it by shooting at enemies and measuring damage.

Seems to hit more for me. They also supposedly fixed the Shield perk for blocking arrows.

I never used to do much dmg to a elder dragon with a bow and zero perks, archery 60. Now I can get him to 50% just pecking away
