Are all Thief followers as bad as Faendal?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 10:03 am

So i started a thief playthrough and got a fellow Elf friend, Faendal.
I really liked him at first since he was an elf and when dressed with a hood looked like a badass follower. But after doing a few thieves guild quest i realised he is a TERRIBLE sneaker. I was sneaking in a cave near these rats and he basicaly ran while sneaking, making the rats run after him. Se thing happend with some mercenaries at an estate i was trying to sneak around. They came after him, revealing my position.
He ended up as barbeque to a pshycotic ratman mage in a cave, and i'm a little sad, but it feels more like a heavy weight has been lifted from my shoulder.
Should i even bother with any other thief followers, or will they just reveal my position all the time like Faendal?

Don't use Faendal if you are going to steal or do anything illegal. He has a high responsibility score (or whatever it is in the CK now) and will alert the guards.

Not sure if he's any good at normal sneaking, but I doubt it. He's an archer, but you're better off using a different follower for stealth. Or better yet, no follower as none of them are very good at sneak. I only use them on my assassin for carrying stuff or when I know/want to get into a normal fight.

Bad idea to use any companions if you want to use stealth as most of them will attack enemies on sight giving away your position.

If you give a follower Muffle boots, it will help, but for anything really stealthy, leave them behind.

Faendal is not a thief-type character. He is an Archer with 1 tagged skill: Archery. And he does not like criminals at all (which considering he forges a letter to try and win the heart of girl who obviously likes the Dragonborn better)

You could enchant some of their armor increasing their sneakiness. I did it with Lydia. Works good.

If you're playing a high sneak character, your bonuses should be so good that you won't need a follower. Sneaky archer, especially. They won't know what hit them.

I did take followers into big dungeons and caves. With sneak enchanted equipment, they'll do okay. I just left them at the door for super sneaky stuff like stealing or DB contracts.

Yes I did the same for Borghakh Great-Heart and she did quite well, also has some archery skill.
