Are Arena and Daggerfall a must-play for TES fans?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 2:31 pm

My character (see sig) wouldn't be the same without having played Oblivion. This is why I can never play a RP khajiit, argonian, etc. unless I RP that they were born in a different province, which just isn't the same. Do you think playing Daggerfall would give my future Redguard and Breton characters greater depth?

Are those ancient games even enjoyable these days?

Depends on your focus. If you like true, challenging RPGs, then Daggerfall is for you. Arena's aged REALLY badly, in my perspective, and I doubt you'll get anything good RP-wise from playing it. Daggerfall's still fun to pick up, though, if you have the time (the map is HUGE!).

Yeah, that's what I meant to say. Forgot to add Morrowind in there as well. Bloody good game, that one was (and still is).

If graphics don't bother you. Sure. Wrong section btw.

Daggerfall is also available free from Bethesda's own website.

http://www.elderscrolls.com/daggerfall/

It's an awesome game, if you can look past the graphics at the depth and detail put into it. And it's free. Did I mention that it's free? Not often that such an awesome game is legally free, so there's very little reason not to play it.

Expect a rather different experience from Oblivion and Skyrim. It's closer to Morrowind in systems, but you'll likely discover that the systems in Daggerfall go farther than they do in Morrowind even. Vampirism, Lycanthropy, Spellmaking, Enchanting...much more detailed, and in my opinion, cooler. Can't play an Orc though, as Daggerfall is set before Orcs were accepted into the Empire.

You can also learn a bit about the history of the Orcs. Just don't make the mistake of making a Linguist character. It's possible to make, but I don't think it's possible to succeed at much of anything as a linguist.

I'm finding Daggefall annoying to get into so far.

I already run a bunch of stuff in DOSbox, so that wasn't an issue, but the .pdf that came with it for installation leaves out a couple of steps, and I cannot get the 213 patch to install no matter what I do.

Can get the game to run but still haven't made it out of the first dungeon because I slept and a couple times the game randomly plopped down enemies I had no chance of defeating right in my path. My feeling is that it looks pretty good if 1) you find out how to play it, as it is not self explanatory by any means, 2) reconfigure the controls to not be torture (seems possible), and 3) have a lot of patience. It seems like a game with depth, just old, clunky, and obviously not particularly pretty to look at.

Its arguably one of the buggiest games ever made. I dont know anybody that ever beat the MQ and didnt get some sort of horrible bug.

Ah, Privateer's Hold...the bane of many a would-be Daggerfall player. I actually advise using a walkthrough. As in, read the walkthrough for that place several times, and then get yourself out of there, and into the real game as efficiently as possible. Getting poisoned or diseased in there (very possible) can easily spell your doom.

just be warned Daggers graphics svck, its a huge hardcoe game for hardcoe RPG'ers only, if you want pretty graphics "do not" play this title

Well both times i've almost gotten out- I think, one time I slept and then all the sudden around the corner was a warrior of some kind who could two shot me, then on another attempt same thing with a ghost that I couldn't kill with normal weapons. I was told to choose the option for an ebony dagger in the questions at the beginning, so i'm gonna try that.

If you love TES for the setting of Tamriel, the lore, history and stories, then I'd say yes.

if you like TES because of a particular game or two because of their gameplay mechanics or its graphics, then I'd say no. The older games are vastly different in terms of gameplay and may be incredibly frustrating for some players.

I know Daggerfall's graphics are terrible; that doesn't bother me. I just want to learn more indepth lore on the provinces and see the points of interest.

The old TES games look like bad versions of Minecraft... no offense

I think for any game series, like TES, the Civilization games, and the Total War games, you're doing your self a favor by trying out their founding titles to see how they started.
