Since the avatar outages, many forumers (myself included for a while) used that since it was difficult to tell us apart.....its a Star Trek reference.

Arrowslayer started it, al least I was under that impression.

It's just a reference to Star Trek since the Borg are all about assimilation and conformity and without avatars it was harder to tell users apart.
