Are Boss Battles too hard?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 3:29 pm

I'm by no means a "good" gamer. That is, my hand-eye coordination isn't that great, I get tied up getting the controls on the PS3 to work, etc. So that said, I have a heck of a time setting the difficulty level. On Adept (average) I can almost handle the game, except that the occasional boss battle -- Blood dragons, some bandid chiefs, Morvath, some higher level nord undead in the tools just kill me time after time. But when I move the difficulty level down the other battles are a bit too easy. It seems a little misbalanced. I've got it set to Apprentice for now to try to balence it out.

Are some of these boss battles a bit too hard relative to the gameplay level?

No.

Lower the difficulty for just the boss battles?

That's what I've been doing. It just is a bit awkward. Maybe Bethesda just has some of the difficulties set wrong. The super hot players can always play at insane level.

Not really too hard but the sudden massive spikes are a little over the top. In the early stages of the game you can breeze through a dungeon only to get one shot killed at the end by an ordinary looking dungeon boss.

The game tend to give the boss mobs a level advantage compared to the other mobs in the area.
For example the variety of mobs and bosses could be...
10 -------------20-------------30 Level range.
|----------------| For normal mobs.
_________________|--------------| For the end boss of a dungeon.

So it could be possible that (without lowering difficulty) you will run into things you might not be able to beat at the time you encounter them. If that is the case those mobs will be locked at that level and as such you can come back when you will stand a better chance.

I wouldn't say so. I have played with the though to set it down to Adpet, but I'm a stubborn gamer I guess. Been playing on Expert for a while, and I like having situations where I have to run to fight another day. Preferably a day with 5-10 more levels under my belt and a companion.

On a note, Mistwatch Bandits are a hell to meet at any level.

Another strategy that might help is this:

When you first discover the location; leave and return when you have gained some levels.

No such thing as too hard. The game already has nearly zero consequences for dying.

If a battle is too tough, learn to run away. There is no shame in not being able to handle something. Come back to it later when you have learned a bit more.

Some boss fights are made to be at certain levels, like Dragon Priests are made for an average fight at level 15. Dragons are really bad if leveled, one thing that can help in what your arch-type is, is by expanding it into more Restoration and Enchanting for melee, Bows and One-Handed for stealth, and Heavy Armor and Enchanting for Mages. I have a Level 28 Warrior that can do 240 damage with his Daedric Sword, one hits tons of enemies on Adpet. Like what Bethesda said before about the leveling system and enemies, some places will have to strong of enemies but some places will have weak enemies.

I like it when the bosses are too hard. It means I get my ass kicked a few times and have to think up a strategy instead of spamming the attack button.

I am a warrior that plays on master ( i know i know shut up)

but i find the bosses to be a fun challenge, i often (though it kinda kills the flow of battle) pause the game and svck down like 40 health potions while trying to kill them, and often find myself having to load a couple times and taking different tactics and using different shouts. its fun!

worst case i wolf form and eat faces!!

I honestly found the Boss fights rather easy, and I'm playing on Master.
So I really wouldn't know.

I have noticed that the difficulty in this game is all over the place and a little nonsensicle.

It takes a little while to know exactly what you can and can't handle at what levels, since there's no real quest progression to keep you fighting in areas that are appropriate for your level. I personally like the unpredictable nature of the game but when you randomly get sent on 5-10 quests in a row that you can't handle and have to retreat from it can get frustrating.

Most of the people who are finding the game easy on master difficulty are the ones who power-game all their crafting and combat skills up before they even really start adventuring, or they've just been playing enough to finally know what quests are manageable at what levels.

I play the game on expert and it's pretty doable with my warrior. My mage was another story, she was constantly dying on expert level. So, it depends on the type of character you play. Recently I cleared a cave but I couldn't beat the boss (some boss where three of his images would attack you, forgot the name). I had to reload 10 saves before I entered the game because it was a cave where you would drop down a hole and you couldn't leave without defeating the end boss

Are you sure about it? Without using exploits (I consider cheesing the pathfinding and other stuff exploit here.)

Part of my problem is that I'm kind of an all-rounder. I'm an Imperial Battlemage and I've spit my perks between warrior and mage stuff. At about 18th level I'm still working on Adept spells and even though I've been enchanting and smithing, the best I can make is Orcish armor (and that is somewhat crippled over getting ore or ingots). Maybe the game likes you to specialize more?

Maybe I need to make a few more iron daggers to level up smithing to better armors. The last repeated kill experience was Labyrinthian. The circumstances of thet initial entrance fight (I'll avoid spoilers) left me inside in the middle of them with all of them ganging up on me. Even chocked full of potions it was tough. Of course I suspect a better player would have some better tactics that would have won the day easier.

duh, your character is far advance than my battlemage. My battlemage is lv23 and still using orcish armor set and adept illusion/alternative spell at the moment, and I'm playing on master difficulty.

If a boss is too hard, just run away and do something else. At later level, you will have more tactical tools to help you overcome the difficulty.
