It could be a glitch, like the game reads theres an animal there so it plays the sound, cause ive heard the sound of a sabre cat sleeping with nothing around me it sounded like I was right on top of it lol

I have had this exact same thing the OP is talking about happen to me. Most notably, on the road toward Markarth, there is a hilly road that when you crest or come down from the crest of the hill, the "earthquake" effect will trigger. I've had it happen on 10 save games, which are 10 separate characters of different playstyles. I didn't think much of it, and in each case, the characters were between 5-10, no dragons have spawned (the MQ part to have them spawn hadn't been completed, and they were too low level for the random spawns to occur) no mammoths and no giants were anywhere near the area in which I describe.

It's a very weird occurrence, and always happens to me without fail, even after deleting the Game Data file. So, InsaneAlphaBeta, you are not alone in this occurrence, at least you have one other person that has had this happen to them.

I'm on the PS3 btw.
glad im not the only one lol,

i play on the Xbox.

I've experienced this as well. No mammoths or dragons (hadn't started the main quest) anywhere near me. Haven't had this happen on PC I don't think but when I played on the PS3 it happened quite a few times.

I vaguely remember this happening to me once or twice. I thought it was a dragon but I couldn't see one, earthquakes aren't in Skyrim (although it would be cool). So I'm guessing it was a mammoth.

I will have to see if I experience it.

I am on the Xbox as well I am betting its a bug and it seems fairly common by the other threads.

It's not a mammoth, because none are anywhere near the location, the screen shakes, controller shakes, and there's a clear rumbling sound associated with all this happening at the same time.

I investigated it pretty thoroughly, and tried to replicate it, but it doesn't happen when you cross the area and go through it again, but it's happened in a few locations, one near Dawnstar, on the road, one up near some glaciers that Insane mentioned (I've been near some when it's happened, probably not in the same location Insane was in) and then again along the road heading toward Riften, but before going up the long winding road to get to the top of the plateau.

It is a rare thing, and more than likely a glitch of some kind, but it has happened frequent enough for me to wonder about it, and it's happened in every single patch, from the shipped version all the way till now.

I've had it happen as well. It's the same "earthquake" you experience when the Greybeards shout to you after killing your first dragon. When it happened to me, there were no mammoths or dragons nearby. It's obviously not the same type of shaking as what is produced by a mammoth either. When I experienced it, I was walking around Lost Valley Redoubt.

It was interesting to read your experiences. From what it sounds like, it pretty much sounds like intended, or is it really that weird?

I've had it happen only a few times, but not dragons (not released yet) or mammoths. Clearly some kind of rumble and quake going on.

No, I didn't find it "weird", only extremely rare and fitting to where I was.

I have had this happen once near Lost Valley also, so it wasn't a mammoth.
Also, I haven't started the main Quest so it wasn't a Dragon.

I'm not sure what it was.

The whole place is gonna blow at the end of the last DLC I tell ya!

In the same way they are predicting Yellowstone will erupt as a supervolcano.

Well it`s obviously a bug. If there are random rumbles that happen to some but not others and nothing nearby and no one doing it then it`s a bug.

Of its very random and some people experience it and some don't...like the headless horseman for example

Just go along the road from Whiterun to Markarth, at the point where the borders of Falkreath, The Reach and Whiterun Hold meet and you will feel it. Then tell us if you think it's a bug.

But there`s no reason to it. If there was a reason to it then we could say it wasn`t a bug.

I don`t fast travel and have wondered up and down that road a lot. Never noticed any `earthquake` unless it was a Dragon swooping by.

there have been times where i was roaming around in Skyrim then all the sudden my screen shakes, my controller vibrates, i hear a rumbling sound, but no dragons are near at all, none, no giants, no mammoths, not even a dragon, and this happens in the game,

so, are there earthquakes in Skyrim? if not then what keeps happening?

Yes there are earthquakes, but only on Burrito night in Sovngarde...
