ARGH! Lost a whole day!

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 10:53 pm

I lost a whole days work doing some things I probably should not have while fiddling around testing some things out and I managed to spawn a seemingly infinite amount of RuinsCandleSconceNoCandles all over my mod in random space and making my world space expand to infinity apparently because the CK told me so.

or something. It was pretty funny actually, seeing those sconces spread all out in empty space randomly in no particular form. They almost looked like stars in the pale blue world space sky.

And...since I have auto save turned on (I tend to forget to save) naturally it autosaved the mod in that state.

So, the mod became a flurry of warnings while loading back into the CK, I bet I clicked "Yes to all" a million times, I was wondering if it would ever get through them all.

So I scrapped the mod in it's current state and loaded up the latest zipped backup, which was from when I uploaded my first level to the Nexus last night. Luckily the work I did today was purely cosmetic and no scripting, quests or custom NPCs were created, (besides lots and lots of Ruins Candle Scones with no candles, obviously)

you know, there is a backup folder in your skyrim folder, where the most recent versions of your mod are saved.

This is why I've set up version control on all of my plugins and script sources.

Care to share as to how? I haven't even heard of this for the CK.

Yeah, that would be nice!

I'm OCD about manually saving every 30 minutes or so. (overkill, I know) But I had a really, really bad glitch with the NV GECK and lost an entire WEEK of work. So I swore after that it would never happen again, lol. But I make copies and save to a new directory, renaming my files with descriptions of what I'm doing. This is especially helpful if I'm getting ready to do something big to the plugin like navmesh, I'll name it "B4 navmeshing.esp" or whatever.
