Because you were at the wrong place at the right time. You are mistaken (or not) for a Stormcloak.

In fact, it's not that clear. Ralof suppose that we had crossed the border, entered Skyrim; maybe we were on our way to leave the country?

Now, what about Ufric? What was he doing here, supposedly near the border (although we could discuss the "border" topic), alone, accompanied by a fistful of guards? Was he trying to cross the border, to go to Morrowind, for example, meeting someone in secret? Was he lured here by someone ill-intentioned? etc. ;)

The reason they don't tell you why you're arrested is because it is for the player to decide.

Its vauge for Roleplaying. It lets you answer that question: what were you doing crossing the border?

I was trying to get back to Oblivion cause the boss scaling in some of the Skyrim dungeons is so poor (making them nearly invincible) that I wanted to get back to something that worked.

Too bad I was caught and now stuck exploring dungeons with semi-broken bosses in Skyrim.

Oh well.

Ralof actually says something about where they were going and that they were ambushed in Eastmarch two days ago. It's not clear whether you were caught in that ambush or later (and I guess it's up to you to decide). He says this when you have followed him to Riverwood.

No one knows the full story. This is a good thing. You decide why.

I like to beleive that my character is the same one from Oblvion and Morrowind.
I posted this in a previous thread:

All my characters since Morrowind have been a similarly looking male Dunmer, with the same name. When I play an Elder Scrolls game, I envisage that my character is the same one from previous games, therefore my Skyrim character is a 250 year old Dunmer.

This is what I believed, happened to him:
After Morrowind, he settled down to a life of luxury with his vast wealth. Sadly he had a problem with spending and had to flee Morrowind when his debtors tried to take his life(His skills had deteriorated dramatically from a lack of use). Bad luck seemed to follow the Nerevarine as his debtors had contacts in the Blades. This resulted in the Nerevarine being secretly imprisoned in the Imperial Prison and all his valuables taken to pay back his debt. Luckily the cell that he was in, was also the Emperors escape route.....

Following the Oblivion Crisis, he stood down as the head of various guilds and spent just under 10 years as the Daedric Prince of Madness. He soon discovered however that he was turning into Sheogorath. Using the help of Haskill and Dyus, he was able to pass on the Title to someone more worthy. Following this, he returned to Cyrodil just in time for the Stormcrown Interregnum. Due to the bitter in-fighting this caused, he was slandered and his famous exploits were called into question. As a result, he spent the next 7 years living modestly as a political adviser. When Titus Meade invaded the Imperial City, he had to flee to Valenwood where he believed he could settle down.

In Valenwood, he changed his identity, met a Bosmer and settled down in one of their cities. The Thalmor invasion of Valenwood caused some uncertainty but it helped to hide his true identity. Over the next century, he lived peacefully with his family and became a full citizen of the Aldmeri Dominion. He eventually became a civil-servant and worked for the Thalmor.

Things changed 4 years before Skyrim began. The Thalmor became more paranoid and began to delve into the past of their staff. When they came to the "Dragonborn" they found his mysterious past very suspicious. When they couldn't find anything from before he came to Valenwood, they declared him to be an Imperial Spy. Fearing for his life, he fled Valenwood. He originally planned to head for Solstheim but had to pass through Skyrim to get there....

While crossing the border, he was then captured by the Imperials, as they thought he was with Ulfric.

Apperantly you were trying to go to a land which, for some reason, is attractive to you.
You know, the civil war and stuff are realy getting people to live in Skyrims.

While trying to cross the border, to join the land of happiness, spotted Ulfric and his army versus the Imperials, fighting on the borders of Skyrim, The Imperials win for some reason, capture ulfric alive,
asseen he didn't want to die fighting. Once the battle is over, they spot you, apperantly notice you aren't from the lands of Skyrim and capture you alive, because entering Skyrim is illigal.
Later that night, while the Imperials set up their camp, to rest for the ride to Helgen, a sneaky thief tries to steal the horses, fails, gets captured and you have a new friend.

Then, they strip off your clothes as well for the horse's thief clothes, while they let ulfric and his guard keep their clothes, put you in a wagon, with handcuffs only, with guards infront of the wagon.
Because surely noone is going to hop off the cart, right? there is noone guarding it and you still have your feet...
Then you have a long conversation with people looking at you, naming random places and lots of divines and gods, which don't mean anything to you...

Once you enter Helgen, the Emperor and the Thalmor came from the far north to witness the spectacle, though they could've never gotting there in time.
You get to the chopping block for execution and then Aldiun, the world eater shows up, saving the dragonborn, which he will regret.

Thats the beginning and the unexplained logic behind it.
I must say, this is probaly one of the most confusing, unlogical parts of the game.
