Assassin is all i can ever be.

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 1:24 am

So, recently i thought i was getting bored of the game because i just dont want to play on my main character who is an assassin type.
I figured i would make a different type of character. I tried that twice, made a mage and a warrior type. Didnt get very far and ended up going back to my stealthy wood elf.
Still bored, i came up with a theory. I have video game OCD and i dont like playing my main char because i feel like i messed up on the perk distribution...
And now i realized i feel a rush of adrenaline when i slice a bandits throat then disappear into the shadows, pulling out my bow for a headshot to my victims buddy.
Now, i dont know what the point of this thread is really. I think what im trying to say is in the title.

No matter how hard i try, being a thief, assassin is the only thing i can do.
I am contemplating making another char almost identical to the one i have now with some tweaks. My OCD takes over, and i dont like playing any of my chars...
The only problem is my reluctance to do it. I think im looking for some support to just go out there and start all over. encourage me!! I dont want to stop playing skyrim, but i dont want to "finish" the game with a character that i completely failed at because it was my first...

I'm not sure how OCD comes into play here. But, sounds more like you have a "style rut". You play all of your games in the same manner. No matter how you attempt to deviate, your natural tendency emerges. There is no way I or anyone else can help you deal with this. You would have to make an effort to play differently and always evaluate your actions against what you would normally do. At that point, you're working -- not having fun.

I am going to have difficulty with the characters I plan to play once I've finished with my Khajiit thief. I play this bizznatch like it's Splinter Cell. :P

I'm in exactly the same boat as you, I tried to do the straight mage build but meh, about 20 hours in I got completely bored and lost interest. Straight up berserker type 2-handed warrior was the same story, got 20 hours in and it just got completely boring to me, deleted him as well. I did the same thing, miffed up a few perk trees on my first character so I'm now on my 2nd identical wood elf trying to put in perks I wanted the first time and having quite a bit of fun. It doesn't help though that the guild questlines are rather short/lack-luster/anti-climactic >.>

I started out with a thief / assassin style character and played it until about level 40.

I then did a two handed smithing heavy warrior and took him to level 24 or so - very different style and just as fun (though easier)

I tried a pure mage after that and got my butt kicked!

what this is guy is stating is --- no matter how he starts out, his natural tendency to play a stealthy character takes over.

Taking the wrong perks is annoying.... I took a lockpicking perk with my thief when I was having trouble with locks, but I think it was just a glitch in the "lock physics", since after the patch I am not getting ten picks breaking instantaneously in a row any more. Now that useless perk star just sits there taunting me... But the character is probably overpowered anyway, so it's not like it matters at all. This is why I see what you mean about OCD. I know it doesn't make any real difference but it is still irritating.

But it can be a relief to play a non-stealth character. Sure speeds up the dungeon crawling, anyway.

Yeah, the perk system is stupid, you don't even have the option to go online with others. The funny part is, in every past Elder Scrolls game you unlocked every perk as long as you had high enough skill level.

My first character was going to focus mostly on magic. He turned out more stealthy. When I got bored with that I started a new character with a focus on Two-handed instead, and I am enjoying that, but I often find myself preferring to sneak. Stealth is just too awesome in this game. If I know I can easily get into a place and kill some people without anyone noticing, I can't just go in there hammer swinging.

I feel ya, I've played a sneak-archer since Morrowind but I think it's just my natural tendencies coming out. No matter what game it's been, I've always been more comfortable with ranged combat and hiding. I pretty much only play other types for a change of pace from time to time. My nord is up to level 31 now as a sneak-archer and I just started over as a khajiit. Gonna be a sneak-archer again but probably arrange my perks better, my nord has some stuck in destruction that I don't really use that often (I pretty much gave up melee in favor of being a human flame thrower, but nothing gets close anymore).

You kinda have to go at it from an RP or challenge perspective for it to work. In my case I'm coming from WoW most recently and my main dudes were a druid (sneak) and hunter (archer). I only ended up playing other classes just to prove that I could and to figure out the mechanics of different roles, which ended up helping me out when working in groups. Given that Skyrim is single player, I don't see a need to learn any other style than what works for you, so in order to maintain any interest in it you will have to have some personal motivation going into it.

Last time I just blasted through a lot of quests and worked the northern area of Skyrim focusing on solo-combat type operations. This time I'm going to try having a companion involved and really work the sneak-thief angle by picking people's pockets before I roast them instead.

I enjoy stealth but my character mixes it up because sometimes just siting their not having an epic battle can be boring.
