AVG hates me

Post » Sat May 14, 2011 12:48 am

Okay, so I want to use Avast instead of AVG, so I go to uninstall AVG. I don't see it in RevoUninstaller's list, so I'm like, okay, whatever, I'll just use AVG's own uninstaller.

http://i468.photobucket.com/albums/rr50/Alaisiagae/Random/avg_ohsnap.jpg The uninstaller hates me!

Anyone with computer fu know what is going on and how to make AVG uninstall? I'm running Windows XP Pro 64-bit edition with SP2. Halp please!

I am so sick of uninstallers not working (this isn't the first time an uninstaller has derfed on me).

Umm, from the http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=983941 thread, maybe program like http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html or http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ might come in handy.

Have you tried removing it through the add/remove programs control panel?

Yeah, if the removal tool isn't working, I'd try the regular uninstaller. After which try running the removal tool to get rid of any traces left behind, if that doesn't work, use CCleaner to hopefully get some of them

AVG does not appear in Revo.

AVG's uninstaller fails no matter what method I use - via add/remove, via ccleaner, etc. The damn thing just throws up the error I linked to in the opening post. Does AVG offer any tech support to people who use the free version?

I'm looking at my event viewer, it says the error is with msiinstaller, not sure if that actually is indicative of the source of the problem, though.

The messy way, of course, is to delete everything related to AVG, but I have a snowball's chance in a volcano of tracking down everything its piddled onto my harddrive, assuming the naming conventions don't all contain "avg" in the file names...

Have you tried to reinstall and then uninstall again?

I just downloaded AVG free to do that. It gives me the same error, that the installer service couldn't be activated. =/

I did a little googleing, and one site suggests using something called "Perfect Uninstaller" to get rid of AVGs that refuse to uninstall. Do you know anything about this program? Is it (and the free trial edition) trustworthy?

+1 to Reading Comprehension. I hate that '+1' trend, but it fit here.

Anyway, I tried to look up reviews of Perfect Uninstaller, since the name itself seems like something kinda dodgy. The only reviews I see seem to be ones by the people who have made it and are advertisemants in disguise. I may be completely wrong, but I would avoid it. Then again, I'm usually a bit paranoid. It just doesn't rub me the right way how the pages featuring it read like a seedy salesman. I'll echo Sivartus' question about downloading the uninstaller, though I'm sure you've tried it already. There's also trying to run the uninstaller in Safe Mode, which is something I've seen people suggesting.

Just try talking to your AVG. Let it know that while things didn't work out like you had hoped, maybe you will still be together again some day and that there will always be a special space in your hard-drive for it.

@Alaisiagae - Once you get whatever MSI did to your computer straightened out, it might be worth attempting to repairing your AVG install and then trying the uninstall process again. You can repair AVG by downloading the free installer from someplace like CNet and selecting the "Repair" option when it comes up.

Make a manual uninstall:

1) Delete AVG's folder in programs. If it says you can't, make 2) and 3) first and then do this.

2) Go to msconfig and in services and startup uncheck anything that has AVG in it. That way AVG won't be run anymore.

3) Restart your pc.

I think that should do it. I wanna see what AVG can do when it's deleted and you take its service out

Either your msi installer is really borked up then or you didn't install the right version (XP doesn't have its own 64-bit version, rather MS tells you to use the Win2003 64-bit version)

Okay, my dad fixed my computer yesterday, so it is working now. Defron, I did select the correct installer. And yet... well, it disabled a ton of system stuff and really messed things up. But now it works again, yay!

@Exo: [censored]yeah! :P
Thanks. :hugs:

I'll try to repair the install if I can figure it out. I had tried re-installing AVG, but it wouldn't even do that without an error. *scratches head* I guess I can bribe my dad with chocolate to get him to figure it out. :hehe:

I'm starting to develop a love/hate relationship with technology.... If I knew more about computers, I'm sure I'd be less frustrated with them when I can't understand what is going wrong. On the other hand, I tried learning C++ and had my head implode at the first chapter, so I'm not sure if there's any hope.
