Awesome Doom Mods

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:00 am

Thought I'd start a topic about some of the excellent mods for the Doom series out there. Go ahead and share some of your favorites. Make sure they stay within the forum rules though. So no advlt content, or any ID Software wads themselves.

I'll start off with one thats still being developed at the moment.

http://cutstuff.net/blog/ Strictly for Doom's Skulltag. Choose a robot master or megaman and start fragging each other with the buster, or several of the well known arsenals.

Go ahead and share yours!

Final Doom (Plutonia Experiment and TNT_Evilution)...both are 32 level wads. It's a commercial product btw.

Are we allowed to show different engines? Like the doomsday engine?

I've already made mention of ZDoom and someone else mentioned JDoom. We haven't been banned yet. :P

I like AEOD for Zdoom, it's a rather nice mod.
AlandoGunsx is another one.

I'm a bit biased because I love weapon mods.
If it's okay, I will provide links to it. However, since they don't have webpages, you might end up on a forum where people say bad words. :)

So, uh, yeah.

I seriously doubt it. id has released the source code for nearly all of their games just for the purpose of source ports being possible. There are similar for the Quake games too.

Anyway, for classic doom you have to play the TeamTNT megawads besides Final Doom: Icarus, Eternal Doom (because it took an eternity to make, and will take an eternity to play trough :D) and Daedalus.

I just got Eternal Doom and the shell won't run on my 64bit system. I tried dropping the wads into ZDoom and they don't show up on the launcher, although TNT and Evilution run fine. I'm going to have to do a bit of research. Thanks for the recommendations though. I'll give the other two a shot later. I'm still d/ling a bunch of stuff from the Steam deals this past weekend. :D

BTW, Metro 2033 is a [censored].

Eternal had some some unusual setup procedure, but i think i got it working with ZDoom. Icarus and Deadalus are just common megawads, but Daeadalus requires ZDoom since it takes advantage of it's advanced scripting features.

Oh and if you can find it, get CyberDreams mod, 32 ways to kill Cyberdemons without weapons :D

They're also damn difficult.

Also try Memento Mori 1 & 2, the second one has pretty cool music and they are more reasonable difficulty wise, if memory serves. For the more hardcoe difficulty, there is also Alien Vendetta.

Here are some good Doom 3 mods :

http://doom3coop.com/

http://www.d3opencoop.com is much better (improved netcode, polish, etc.), for campaign co-op anyway. In fact, LMS's code is based off of the code of an OpenCoop beta... and it was used without permission. Which is why OpenCoop isn't, well, open anymore. The only advantage of LMS is the extra game modes it has.

As for classic Doom, well, you can't go wrong with the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aJjMOy-Ops. (Download http://www.mediafire.com/?lxbmtbommex. Only works with ZDoom.)

Among doom players the word "mod" is not used. What was changed about the game is described when you reference the change.

"Map" is synonymous with "level". A "wad" is a file which contains one or more player-made Doom levels. A megawad is a wad which replaces a large number, or all, of either Doom2's maps or maybe Doom1's maps, depending on which "iwad" is meant to be used (iwad meaning, is it doom2, or doom1, etc). A "total conversion" would change the graphics and sounds around on various things to try to create a different-themed game, and probably replace the maps as well. A 'port' is a game executable that was created from the source released by ID. A "patch" is an edit to ID Software's doom2.exe or doom.exe or udoom.exe (user-made patches are very uncommon but they do exist).

As far as what this thread asked for - - suggestions - -

Deathmatch -

a large number of deathmatch players use the Zdaemon port. There are a large number of public servers in both Europe and USA that people connect to and play on. There's seperate leagues for European and American players, and in general the USA and Europe servers use somewhat different configurations. http://www.zdaemon.org is where to get it. For most of the game servers, the only thing you need to own on-your-own is the doom2.wad file, the rest of it is downloadable through the launcher itself. However, if you see a server in the launcher which requires a different commercial iwad, such as one from Doom1 or Final Doom, you'd have to get that instead of the Doom2 one.

In the Zdaemon launcher you'll see some of the available game instances are restricted to only allow 2 players in (1 on 1), and others that are meant for like 3 to 16 players (16 is pretty high). There's also CTF. If it's your first time in there, you probably don't want a 1 on 1 server, you could attract a game that's too hard to be fun for you.

Single player -

Doom wad authors sorta just never stopped making wads. And, this is like, 16 years later. So, there's a WHOLE lot of them.

I couldn't begin to list all of the doom wads here. You could start your search here... http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?dir=levels/ ...

Lately I've been going completely insane over http://www.rabotik.nl/pluto2.html, a spiritual successor to the old Final Doom WAD. Many people I know preferred TNT over Plutonia because of the soundtrack and more detailed maps, but Plutonia 2 mixes the best of both worlds. Did I mention the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqv5H3STNm0?

I've always heavily admired the Doom community for its resilience - I've had a great affinity and bond for many of the older engines, such as Quake and Half-Life, and I'm glad to see their respective mod communities, no matter how small, continue to be innovative and express themselves creatively to keep the spirit of the games they love alive. But for both of these games, the fanbase is in the hundreds, and the remaining mappers the tens. What's so interesting about the Doom community is that it's constantly growing - between its title as a cultural icon and id Software continually making (admittedly bad) sequels, word continues to spread. It's an example of the Internet phenomenon at its finest.

Ah, i love the Doom Midi music  I have to try this, i finished Plutonia on ultra-violence (cheating with ZDooms mouse aim and quicksave :D) not too long ago. Let's see if i still got it :gun:

Edti: wow, the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nz8m3YV2H0w&feature=related music is exactly what i love about classic doom soundtracks

When I played Plutonia(on UV of course), I accidentally found the secret exit to Go2It. And that's where my save currently is for obvious reasons.

Woulda used wad if I wasn't including Doom3. Wad's are technically mods anyways. Anyways, feel free to point out any that you specifically thought were a cut above the rest.

Super secret levels often are "for doomgods only" difficulty in megawads, in the official games (except Plutonia) they are pretty easy. Super Secret level of PS Doom 2 "Club Doom" was ridiculously easy, and the secret Wolfenstein maps in PC Doom 2 weren't exactly difficult either.

No love for the Skulltag port? :(

Also, Skulltag is vastly more superior for online/offline/etc modes.
It has Invasion, Last Man Standing, Deathmatch, (Duh), Survival, etc, etc.
The list goes on.

Zdoom may have lead to Zdaemon, but Skulltag succeeded it a long time ago. Not to mention Skulltag's based on Gzdoom.

I use skulltag. Mainly for mouse support though.

I'm surprised that this one hasn't been mentioned, or at least I haven't noticed it.
