Do you find yourself killing people more often or creatures?

Well considering many of your enemies are going to be humanoid, I would suggest the black star. Every humanoid soul is grand but not every creature soul is of grand quality.

My first playthrough I got Azuras just to complete Oblivion Walker achievement, all others I went with Black as it's so much easier to fill with random bandits, etc---anything humanoid...

LOL you don't have to kill followers to fill the star! It's not the Ebony Blade! hahahaha

I went with Black Star this time around, because I do kill more humanoids (bandits, rogue mages etc) and so I get more grand souls that way. There are not many grand soul creatures around! So yea, black star is definitely the way to go if you need grand souls!

We can lay out all the details if you like, but I think we're (I know I am) trying to keep it vague so as not to spoil too much. :P

From a purely numbers standpoint, the Black Star is the superior choice. You fight humans far more often than anything else, and humanoids give you grand souls.

Spoiler

Its only when you apply roleplay considerations that the decision becomes more difficult, but not by much. Most people would say that the Black Star is "evil" and the plain Azura's Star "good". This assumes that the soul captured in the star is conscious and what the experience is like. I tend to think the experience of being in a soul gem is not conscious, so it makes no real difference. Furthermore, disobeying a self-interested Daedra doesn't seem like an immoral act. Furthermore, to even consider the Black Star you have to confront a crazed wizard who was killing people for research. Clearly bringing an evil character to justice for his crimes is a moral win.

So go with the Black Star and don't look back.

I know, but one path is little less good, right? Plus, "Black" Soul Gem.

 Sure, the Black Star will "cut the Star from Azura" Hmm, I wonder if it's still considered a Daedric Artifact... need to check that! And the guy states that it will no longer hold white souls, but who needs lesser white souls, if you can have a grand soul every time you kill a bandit hahahaha

Either star will still count toward the achievement so its still a Daedric artifact.

Black star all the way. It's better than Azura's in pretty much every way, and whether you consider the morality or not, Azura wasn't exactly good natured either. She pretty much drove the dude insane with her artifact and brought about the events that lead to him slaughtering people for souls.

Trying to quote the Simpsons? It's Carl, not Lenny.

On Topic: Do undead, like Draugr still have souls, like in Morrowind? Can you still capture conjured creatures, like Atronachs? If yes, I may go with Azura's Star. I'm playing a Dunmer, may as well stay on Azura's good side.

Yes, you have plenty of enemies to kill, Riften is nice as you can hunt in the ratway sever or just trap the random thieves who are killed by the guards at night.
At low level your only source of white souls is marmots who are rarer and harder to kill.

However if you don't want to raise enchanting and make self enchanted gear the white star work just as well.
I would also feel a bit dirty as a Dumer double crossing Azura.

Yeah, that's something dunmers would never do: turning their back on present deities.... :shifty:

The black star holds both black & White souls so it would be the better choice.

I would go with the black star, just because you normally fight more humanish people.

Honestly, do what ever you think makes sense from an RP perspective. You get so many soulgems it's ridiculous. There's no need to worry about one reusable one (if Azura's star held more than one soul, it would be different). Need a grand soul? Go kill a mammoth or any number of other things. It's simple enough. Or grab a black soul gem and use it, they aren't that hard to get overall.

Frankly, I have so many souls, I don't know what to do with them all.

So rare they're not even in the game.

Did you mean "mammoths" by any chance?
