Is it bad to have too many saves in Skyrim PC?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 8:29 am

I have like over 400 saves in skyrim pc and some people say it will lag if there are too many saves but I don't believe them. And i just hate it when it autosaves because sometimes I save then it autosaves after a few seconds and it lags when it autosaves. The reason why I have so many saves is because of autosave.

Yes the load screen will start to bog down and lag once you have too many savegames in that directory, as the game constantly stutters as it loads/reads the savegame info. In Fallout 3, too many save games actually caused the game to not close properly.

Easy solution is to make a new folder in the savegame directory like "SaveBackup" and cut/move all but the last 10-20 saves and your auto/quicksaves to that new folder. I do this every so often to keep that save directory a bit lighter weight. Its also a good way to backup save files just in case. I have over 1000 save files but only 200 or so max in the main directory at any given time.

What I do is the following: Every time I hit between 70 - 100 saves, I toss them all in a 7z archive to save space and to catalog them. I name the archives according sequence. For instance, I name the first one Save Archive 1 or something. Doing this, it prevents the sluggishness that many saves will cause and it saves me a lot of space. I cut down from over 100 MBs to about 20 - 40 MBs, as well.

I can then go ahead and back them up in a manner I choose.

Hope that helps some :)

I usually never go above 100 to 150 saves in my folder. I have not noticed any issues, it just makes going back to a milestone easier.

No, the autosave writes over itself and you will have no more than three files.
In ~450 hours my Level 64 guy has amassed a total of 30 saves...
How on earth have you got over 400 saves? At 12-15MB each, heheh, you do the math.

Well, I've got more than 550 saves on my playthrough. Skyrim doesn't have any real issues with it and I periodically transfer those I don't need to a different folder.

To be honest though, I don't exactly know why I keep so many of them...
