[Character Idea] Baldur's Gate style Cleric

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:49 pm

I've played both Morrowind and Skyrim as a stealth archer-rogue type of class, trying to stay neutral but usually ending up borderline evil. I'm bored of it. I thought I'd make a BG style Cleric-- for those of you unfamiliar with the BG Cleric they're basically heavy armored buff machine, generally wielding mace and shield and can whoop the [censored] out of undead, they also have some heals. Here's what I'm going for:

Alignment: Lawful Good

Focus:
  • Heavy Armor
  • Block
  • One-Handed
  • Restoration (prioritizing vs. undead abilities)
  • Illusion (prioritizing vs. undead abilities)
  • Enchanting
Restrictions:
  • Will not learn or cast Conjuration nor Destruction spells.
  • Will not pick pockets or steal (unless 100% necessary).
  • Avoids fights when possible.
  • Prioritizes quests from temples.
  • Roots out undead wherever he can find them
  • Eat 2xday and sleep 1xday
I'm looking for any thoughts/criticisms you have? Does this look fun? How is sword and board combat? Is it overly difficult to have a mace/shield and then lose the mace for a moment to pop a spell? Thoughts? Suggestions?

I have a similiar idea in my "next character" category.

Heavy Armor
One Handed
Block
Restoration

Where we differ is that i was thinking Fire Destruction spells only. Clerics have/had spells like Flame Strike, Flame Cloak, and Sun strike like spells if I recall.

I would not use enchanting or smithing, though maybe some potion making.

I picture a cleric using heavy armor, but no shield, and relying on healing and wards to protect not blocking

The Cleric needs to use blunt, only. So not just one-handed, but maces specifically.

Clerics from 2nd edition IE from the games of the Baldur's gate series

Cleric

Clerics have spells bestowed on them by their deity and can fight wearing armor and use crushing (no edged or pointed) http://www.planetbaldursgate.com/bg/character/classes/tables/proficiencies.shtml#weaponsallowed. Clerics can cast all priest http://www.planetbaldursgate.com/bg/character/spells/priest/ except those from Animal, Plant or Weather spheres and have only minor access to the Elemental sphere, restricting them to Elemental spells of 3rd or lower level. Clerics also have the ability to http://www.planetbaldursgate.com/bg/character/classes/tables/turnundead.shtml. The prime requisite for clerics is wisdom with a minimum score of 9 being the only requirement to become a cleric. Priests of specific mythoi are not currently implimented in BG.

So you'd be limited to blunt weaponry. Have bonus spells via your diety of choice. So you may have options to use alteration and what not if it's somethign your chosen diety might grant. Pplus have a look at the cleric spell lists you might have similar spells in SKyrim you could use in there stead.

Thanks for the input guys (Minsc 'n Boo you made my day!!)

One question: As I'll be using all resources, would you recommend I evenly distribute health/stam/magic as I level, or maybe a formula like for every 2 points of health/stam I'll put in one point of magic? Thoughts?

Thats a hard one.....Well I'd say you can stop putting points into Stam after 200 or so points unless you really want to go crazy with the power attcking each fight. I'd say 200-250 magicka is good too since your not goign to be spamming spells too. So dump the rest into health, and add in what you feel is lacking afterwards. It's really an area for personal preferance in your fighting style.

You will get bored with just one handed so diversify to using war hammers sometimes.

I was thinking Restoration and Illusion as my spell school focus.. but I'm thinking Alteration might be more appropriate than Illusion. If memory serves, BG mages had armor buffs just like the Alteration school...

Sounds like a fun build!

For H/M/S stats, Andaius is right... you won't need very high magicka or stamina stats, but if you play on higher difficulty settings, having a little more stamina will help. Since you would be doing less damage, more power attacks will keep you alive and fighting effectively. Either that, or your focus on restoration could take the sting out of things if you get the stamina healing perk. Being able to refresh stamina on the fly with a spell will do you some good, and this perk could free you from "cheesing" the game via potion spamming.

yeah they do have spells (if you look in that BG priest spells list I had in the quote) like Bark skin (oakflesh in TES case) and protection from element type of spells.

Woot I'm right about something? YES! :P

I've already made a Pathfinder Cleric and gotten him to 53, it is extremely powerful:

Heavy Armor
Enchanting (Basic Tier One Talent only)
Smithing (Heavy)
Restoration (All Perks)
Alteration (All Perks)
Illusion (No Perks)
One-Handed (Specialized with Swords)

I have very high Armor Rating, maxed Magic Resist (From Alt Perks, Lord Stone, Mara's Agent and Breton Racial) and can heal near endlessly, it's very effective.

With capped armor and magic resistance you don't really need to worry about blocking all that much, especially when one of your primary abilities is patching up the damage as fast (if not faster) than it comes in. A more 'conventional' One-Handed spec would definitely take blocking, since Restoration would be a minor skill at best and the idea would be to leverage block-stun from chain-bashing.

He may also be using a companion, in which case he's speccing to not have to worry about himself that much and can instead concentrate on keeping said companion in the fight, with his mace in reserve for harder targets.

Quick update: Started the Cleric and made it to level 8 tonight. WOW this is FUN combat compared to the usually "fire arrows from the shadows" I'm used to. I LOVE it. Currently playing on Expert difficulty, Shield is great fun when trying to stagger the opponent while he's readying a power attack-- running away while channeling heal is also really intense. I've decided I'm going to perk up Alteration instead of Illusion, however I'll still be using some spells from the Illusion school. Thanks for the input ppl.

Edit: To clarify, I don't use companions. I've found they make the game a little too easy for my liking, and they tend to get in the way.

Cool build why not add use the silver sword as it is effective against the undead?

Clerics only use blunt weapons (i.e. Maces), so swords are out. He'll be taking restoration perks and spells that will handle undead nicely, though.
