Battery back up (for pc)

Post » Sat Dec 03, 2011 8:02 am

I am having a hard time figuring out what size backup I should get for my PC and the TV I use for a display.

I need something to last about 10 minutes running a 42" lG LCD and my PC.

AMD 6 core, 5870, / 1HDD / 1 DVD reader / 750W PSU.

Any Ideas?

May I ask why you need one? If it's just for gaming you probably shouldn't bother, and if it is for gaming then the battery backup will probably run out rather fast.

And damn that's a big screen. I hope your PC is powerful enough to make that size useful?

Its for power failures, we have been getting them often lately.

Yes it is, I have a XFX 5870, looks good too.

I'd imagine that any battery pack that could keep those monsters going for too long would probably be expensive. Depending on what the actual draw of all that actually amounts to.

Now don't go believing that I'm some CRT user ogling your shiny TV. My screen is a "40.

Generators for the win!! If you are having power outages that often then a battery backup isn't the option for you.

My generator can do my house, and my neighbors house no problem. 11 gallon tank runs for 12+ hours before needing to fill up depending on the load. Currently, I have my living room (includes lights and fans), fridge, bathroom, oil fired furnace (though it never gets used [Coal FTW!!!], and well tied to it. Works out nicely since we see most power outages during the winter. I can watch tv, play my xbox and my pc, I don't need to use my range or microwave to cook since in the summer I can grill and the winter I can throw a pan on my coal stove and cook. Hell, if I wanted to I could pull myself off the grid too.

Thing is a beast. For what you are going to pay for a decent battery backup you might as well buy a generator.

Although, in the long run, for a properly installed generator you're going to need an electrician so you'd be looking at $500 for a low end generator and $500+ to install a switch and transfer circuits to said generator. It was much cheaper for me since I had the experience in the electrical field to tie mine into my home. I only had to pay $30 and a case of beer to tie into my main panel. All the other stuff I was able to do myself.
