Ok. So, I decided to become a thane in Morthal, right. Jarl tells me I need to go assist a couple of her people, but the first person I need to go help is lying on the ground, dead. I try searching em, maybe it'll trigger something...nope, still shows an indicator above his head. What exactly am I to do now?

Stuff like selling firewood and mining ore counts toward your count of people helped.

Not sure, but the only person I ever remember seeing lying around Morthal dead was Lami, and I never did find out why she dropped dead. There are others you can help PROF4NE, turn the quest off and go ask around you should still easily get three.
