Re-Becoming Thane of The Rift?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 4:30 am

If you become thane of the rift, but then transfer the city over to the imperials, is it possible to become thane again? In other cities, you have to go talk to the new jarl about become thane again, but Maven doesn't even let you talk to her. She just generates generic responses. The house in Riften is my favorite house and I'd like to get it as soon as possible with my new character, but I don't want to get it early if it means that I'll permanently lose my thane status. I don't want to do the Civil War, but I want to give Riften over to the Imperials during the main quest. So I can't avoid the town changing ownership.

I always owned homes in the towns before doing the civil war quest line. I never had an issue becoming re-thaned afterwards... but maybe Maven doesn't like you. Did you side with or against the thieves?

You can't side against the thieves. And her disposition shouldn't have anything to do with it. She offered to let my character buy a house, but I had already owned it, and there wasn't any further conversations with her. If you could, go steal an item in Riften and see if you can use your Thane excuse. I couldn't. She doesn't say anything about being Thane again.

IIRC there is/was a glitch with the Thanedom in Riften where if you buy the house and go inside it before becoming Thane, the dialogue options about becoming Thane will not show up in future conversations with the Jarl.

If you bought the house when Laila was Jarl and have been using it all this time, and now need to talk to "the Jarl" (even though it's a different person) about becoming Thane but she won't discuss it, that could be why.

I was already thane. I completed the quest and had a housecarl and everything. The issue is with getting your status back after a change in town leadership.

That's exactly my point, the fact that you were thane is now irrelevant. Your old title is null and void and you must be granted a new thaneship by the new Jarl.

The glitch happens if you've already been inside Honeyside before becoming thane, and you are back in the "before becoming Thane" position but have already been inside Honeyside. It's just a hunch but I suspect neither the game nor the glitch care if you were a thane before or not - as far as current events are concerned, it's like you were never thane at all.

I didn't know this. Damn. I just gave Riften to the Imperials :(

But, wait. Does this mean that I still have Honeyside but Iona's gone?

Are you in the Thieves' Guild? In my game, I was the TG Guildmaster before doing the Civil War quest (as well as being Thane of Riften), and Maven never offered me any dialogues once she was in charge, but to the best of my knowledge, I never lost my title in Riften. I think that maybe if you're a member of the TG, Maven doesn't require you to renew your title as thane. And in any event, after the CW quest jarl changeovers, you don't lose your home or housecarl in any of the citites. At least I didn't. All I ever had to do was approach the new jarl and the title was just re-assigned to me (with the exception of Riften, where I just assumed I'd never lost it - but I could be wrong).

I dunno, I guess you'll have to go there and find out? I've only had Riften change sides once and I never bought the house or became Thane in that playthrough.

Funny I remember reading somewhere that if you wanted to become Thane in all the holds you should do it *before* the truce or any CW stuff, otherwise you would have problems later. But I rather think it's more likely to be the other way around... even if it doesn't get buggy you still have to go back and have a do-over in every hold that changed sides so it seems kinda pointless to do it unless you know a hold is never gonna change sides in that particular game.

Note to self: go to Riften next time I play.

I did the TG questline but I grew tired of the side jobs and isn't officially Guildmaster. I haven't done CW at all with this character and tried to be as neutral as possible during Season Unending. I'll report back to the thread once I've checked.

Ok, now I've checked, and I'm confused.

Iona is still at Honeyside, greeting me as thane.

I stole a helmet in the market, just to see what the guards would say. The option to use my title to make them look the other way didn't show up, and I'm pretty sure I haven't already used that option in Riften.

In Mistveil Keep, Maven was very content with the new order, but she didn't offer any dialogue options at all, so I had no way of finding out if she viewed me as thane or not.

Why aren't these kind of things in the stats?! >.<
