Been using the same sword for a long time!

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 3:51 pm

Hello All,

Early on I started the Companions quest line and got a Skyforge Sword. I enchanted it with a grand soul gem for fire damage, and after some 40 more hours of playing, this has been the best weapon that i have come across.

I *just* found a glass sword last night that can do just a couple more points of damage.

The range of weapon / damage and even armor is very limited in Skyrim...the most limited in any RPG I have ever played.

I do very little enchanting and smithing, mostly because everyone warned of unbalancing the game too easily, but I would have expected to come across "cooler" stuff.

Thoughts?

My first character was using the same Scimitar from level 10 until about level 35 when I got Chillrend. I must admit those Curved swords ARE mighty impressive.

Haha I used tHe skyforge sword and only the skyforge sword for almost 150 hours. I love that sword. It's simple and does the job right. Now I use the dawn breaker.

I like the shallow damage curve, it means that you can use the weaker gear in end game if you are good and "look" the way you want to. As opposed to MMO's where everyone essentially looks identical within a given class by the end game because there is onyl 1 or 2 gear sets that are viable to use

You are given good gear way too early. I think it was 15 or 20 levels before I found robes/hood better than what I found on a dead prisoner in the starter dungeon, or found something better than a bow thousands of years old used by ancient Nords. It's rather frustrating when you get something that good pushed on you so early, then the next 20 or so levels you find nothing worth replacing it with.

In real life do you "upgrade" your possessions on a daily or weekly basis, or is it not possible to get something decent right here and now that'll last a long time? - I smell MMo mindset creeping in

Or perhaps a mindset that prefers options. You know.... options? One of the basic tenents of freedom. Which I thought most people enjoyed and is what makes an open world game shine.

Also, for me at least, finding new stuff in my travels and upgrading my gear is one of the reasons I play these type of games. It helps further along my progression from a weak nobody to an all-powerful force. Using the same weapon for 30 levels would take away from that I think (imo).

I feel like the lower level stuff had plenty of options between the different faction armors and weapons, it's when you get to the higher levels that all the items get the same style with no variation. When I saw the different things you could make when I was first crafting Iron and Steel items I was really happy, but then I got up to the top of the tree and everything from Dwarven to Daedric had no variation whatsoever. Somewhat dissapointing, but the rest of the game is fun as hell so whatever.

And yeah, Skyforge Steel totally rocked man. I used my greatsword on my first character forever.

Before I left Riverwood I had.

2 frost weapons
Hide boots of lifting ( + 25 to weight )
gauntlet of wielding ( 15 % )
Studded armor of something ( improves light armor skill ) I did buy this piece.
A bow of soul trap
And a ring of minor stamina
oh and a circlet of something

Only did Barrows and Embershard...

So yeah magic is just handed out way too early...

But maybe that's just this run through...as I am practically tripping over cool magical stuff this trip. Not just boring Frost damage junk either...

My warlock used Skyforge steel until she learned how to conjure swords from Oblivion. Most of the time, she doesn't carry any weapons.

Skyforge weapon has the same properties as elven so it's good medium to upper level gear, with smithing you can keep it the rest of the game.
Think you probably get it to early, should get access to it as an reward for doing the companion quest line as the ancient nordic armor.
