Hello, I have just started a new character and entered Riverwood; I am told to speak to Gerdur... which I have done, all dialogue options are greyed out and I cannot get the quest to advance. It is stuck at "speak to Gerdur for help"

I suggest you just go to Whiterun after you are done in Riverwood.
