Being good is not easy...

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:08 pm

My Dark Elf character got a quest from one of the companions that has me in a moral quandary.

"Someone in Whiterun has been kidnapped! We need you to go rescue them!"

OK, I'm a basically good guy. Sure.

"It's Heimskr. He's being held at such and such a place."

I can just imagine how this would have played out in real life:

Me: The same Heimskr that harangues me on a pretty much daily basis on how evil the elves are?

Quest Giver: Uh, yes.

Me: The same one who NEVER shuts up for 12 hours straight and calls us all "maggots"

QG: uh...

Me: Bwahahahahaaha! This is a joke, right?

QG: No, it's serious.

Me: *wiping tears of laughter from eyes* or some sort of test?

QG: I assure you, this is serious. we are being payed lots of money to get him.

Me: I imagine so. Those kidnappers must be desperate. Talk to me again when they offer twice their previous offer. It won't be long.

I've never been so torn about completing a mission. I'm sure others have had similar moral quandary missions. Please feel free to let me know.

Thanks for your time!

let's see:

kidnapping vs. hateful words

i think the kidnapping is a just a tad worse than something that only hurts you if you let it.

It could be worse.

The Companions sent me off in a quest to rescue Nazeem, the Mr Have-you-been-to-the-cloud-district-lately guy.

The great thing about this sort of quest though is you can deliberately fail. Oops, Nazeem died, sorry!

I'm a friend with the blacksmith in whiterun. (the female). She gave me some mead and ale as a token of appreciation. Then the companions hire me to give her a good beating with steel-fists on. *shrug* There went that friendship.

And the frequency with which Mjoll the Lioness comes up makes me suspect the Thieves Guild are behind it... I hate the "Hired Muscle" quest.

Being good is never easy. Being evil is easy.

That`s the point.

If you can master your own desires and do something good that does not immediately benefit you, but you know is better than the wrong, that`s what makes you a good person.

The only time I broke from my generally good moral standing was to obtain the Staff of Corruption. Granted, that staff was the used to slay a dragon attacking Dawnstar (It had already killed several guards and one of the miners) a mere 5 minutes later.

If you RP it pretty easy. Just think WWDD ( what would drovakhiin do)
My one would do whatever the hell he wants and still be a good guy. For example, Nazeem needs to be saved WWDD? He would sneak into the camp save nazeem then go giant fighting with Nazeem!

Its not my fault the giant stood on him.
I wouldn't kill an bandits but the leader.

I thought you said you were playing a "good guy"?

Laughing at the person asking for help, requiring financial compensation, etc.

So what if the guy that is captured is a complete deuch? You're supposedly a good guy, well good guys do what is right. The right thing to do is to be the better person and rescue this guy. Even if he is racist to your race.

This reminds me of many other threads. Complaining about how the game makes it impossible to be good. Like getting the achievement for doing all the daedric quests. First off, they are daedra. They are the TES equivalent to devils/demons (aedra being gods/angels). So what do you expect? Aside from that, an evil character couldn't get the achievement either. Meridia gives you a quest that is purely good.

TES is a different universe. The morals of that place can/is different than that of the real world. If you try to play a good/evil character based on RL morals then you will be restricted. I prefer going bit of the neutral side. Think someone for hire. If a hitman kills some target, is the hitman really evil? Or is the person that hired the hitman the evil one.

Now one can say that the hitman is evil for being what he is since it's a choice.

Yet, being in the military is a choice, but if you find yourself in a combat situation (whether you are ambushing the enemy or simply returning fire) and you kill at least one person. Does that make you evil?

Haha, good stuff :D But if your the ''good guy'', you should do the mission/quest. It's kinda like Batman thingy, no matter who are the bad guys or what have they done etc. You still let them live no matter what, and even help them if needed.

One second, I'm waiting for someone to kill me while I'm shooting a up a school full of mean hearted children with a gas powered 5.56 rifle.

Now, does that seem morally correct? Not really, kidnapping is far worse than going off & being a ignorant bigot.

Being a good guy can indeed be very difficult.

Like what to do about a certain old lady torturing little homeless kids, since a good guy wouldn't let that continue by doing nothing. Or the House of Horrors, which is initially very misleading. "O sure sirrah! I shall help you investigate this house because I am so very friendly and nice...."

Yeah, the 'good' thing to do in that situation would be to rescue him regardless of the slurs he made about your race in the past. Who knows? An act of compassion on your part could make him permanently alter his views.

IRL.

Not in videogames, where the opposite is true.

For those of you wondering, I did actually rescue the git. And some of you need to relax a bit about taking a humorous post way too seriously!
