Belethor selling treasure chests.... WTF!?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 8:11 pm

I was in Whiterun and went into Belethor's shop at 8:01pm to try and grab him before he left. I caught him leaving his stall just about to go out the backdoor but the option to trade was still there. He had all his normal stuff, but under the Misc section I found he was selling something that looked like one of the wooden treasure chests (you know the low rarity ones) and it was called 'Do Not Delete'

It weighed 0.5lb and worth 300 septims. Being a Misc item it has no option to use, but something really interesting happens when you try drop it - it slowly fades into existence wherever your cursor is pointing, and just floats in the air. Note it doesn't just APPEAR like normal items do when dropped... it slowly fades in. There is no option to open it, just 'Take Do Not Delete'. The cool thing is because it floats in the air, you can use it as a very handy stepping stone to make a jump you otherwise couldn't. It actually is very helpful!

To note - I'm on PS3 and have no mods nor have I used any glitches.

Anyone have any idea WTF this is? Or experienced anything similar??

Sounds you ran into a very very odd bug. Never heard of that before.

I'd guess its a placeholder of some sort, and you're not supposed to see it. http://www.gamesas.com/user/29338-donotdelete/

Even bugged to death, Skyrim remains the best game ever. The other games have to be perfect; the charm of the TES games is in their... unpredictability and you never get bored with them!

Indeed finding new bugs like the OP described is a quest on its own.

I think you found the secret chest that Belethor uses for his inventory. My guess is that every vandor has one, but you should not be able to see it. I wonder if looting it causes Belethor to lose all of his stuff.

O_o

I officially request to have my name changed to: Do Not Delete.

Not really, but what's that all about?

As far as that box, yeah, you're not supposed to be able to see it or buy it. From what I've heard, it could cause some undesirable effects. I'm not so sure how true that is though.

I hope not! I've invested in his store and everything and don't want to lose him as a merchant. Love my handy little lightweight portable stepping stone though... will keep that on me methinks :P

I assume that the hidden chest which holds his inventory has done a Klein Bottle and appeared within itself as an item. If it works like Oblivion, there's a box under the floor somewhere which cannot be reached, and thus robbed, without TCL in the console. And for some reason it has appeared in his inventory.

It's not an actual chest. It's a Misc. Item using the same mesh and texture as a chest. Due to how Skyrim handles it's game objects, ALL containers behave a certain way, and all Misc. Items behave a certain way . It was likely a placeholder, something that they could use to see how the chest would look in certain areas without having to actually go and drop a bunch in from the CK and remove them later (or something similar). And for some reason it got added to the vendor inventories by mistake.

I wonder if you used that stepping stone chest, it would allow you to get over ot the part of Thalmer embassy, that is closed off, once you complete the quest there. I tried the bowl deal, and couldnt get it to work. I see so very few thalmer, so i go up there and kill them with arros from over the fence. try it, and see if you can get into other part of thalmer embassy.

No. I tried. Not on the box, but I did find a spot where I could get up on top of the wall but I could not jump down into the courtyard. The wall is an impassable texture.

What's the object ID for it? I'd like to try spawning it via console.

i was also able to climb on top of the short wall, but i'm stuck there, or have to climb down. Hopefully his chest dealio works.. I tried the bowl glitch and got bored as i was through the wall, but couldn't get past it.

I ran into the same item. I'm playing on a 360. Of course,I bought it. When I try to place it in a room, it just hovers as well. I thought it was pretty cool and haven't experienced any "abnormal" glitches. I was able to stow it away inside a trunk and am hoping that we can actually use it for a storage trunk with one of the patches, although I'm not overly hopeful.

It's not an easter egg like the video author claims, but it does show where these chests belong.

For those that want to try reach hidden chests with a console, see if this works.
