The best that you can craft yourself is dragonscale.

I enjoy wearing my nightingale, both for appearance and stats after you upgrade it.

If you're a mid level player, I suggest you use something like Glass Armour that an be found as loot or as items in chests. You can also craft it yourself with the necessary materials.

For looks I like glass. For actual armor and protection I like glass.

I think the best set of light armour is the set of ancient Dark Brotherhood armour. I do wish they would fix the bugs on the cowl though. I would enchant the the set of worn DB armour and wear it , but for some reason I can't upgrade it to get the same level of protection that I get from the other DB sets.
