Evolution is about weeding out the weaklings and producing a new generation more adapted than the current one. That's the only meaning to it. As a concept - it hates sick people, disabled people, stupid people, etc. But as a race, we tend to these people. So we are fighting natural evolution and shaping our own.
Oh crap. I've become involved.
Oops.
In my ideal world everyone has downs. Those people rule

The star baby is just more progress, more rebirth... What's so profound?
If you don't find the last 20 minutes of that movie self-evidently profound, then I can't help you much. What is the relationship between the star-baby and technology? What is the place of HAL with the future of humanity? Do we need exterior arbiters like the monoliths to really understand our development (or maybe to develop ourselves actually) or do we not? I feel like any contrarian can shrug his shoulders at profundity...

You can always find something profound no matter where you look. The question is whether it's implied or it's inferred by the audience. I guess I feel like none of the questions you ask are applicable to real, current life. Fiction generally reflects life in some way, but since there's no real world equivalent, parallel, or metaphor for the monoliths, it's hard to apply.
Anyway, if that's as deep as your profundity goes, then I can't help you much.
Thanks for that. I do think you're right that people are often quick to call "profound" whenever they see ambiguity or paradox. People mistake lack of coherence for depth. And I can't stand that.
