Best paid PC Security?

Post » Sat Jun 11, 2011 1:34 am

Don't recommend MSE, I've got to have a paid program (probably an ocd of mine).

Something that works well with gaming rigs and won't use up to much resources. Antivirus and firewall suite. I hear Kaspersky Internet Security is good, but maybe a resource hog? What about Avira Premium Internet Security? I heard that eset is good but has bad firewall protection.

I have Kaspersky and love it. It can definitely be a resource hog, but it is highly customizable if you want to make it lighter. However, I have it set up to have maximum security, which can sometimes take up around 15% of my CPU. Luckily, Kaspersky is easy to shut off and has a "Gaming Mode" that automatically shuts off some nonessential features whenever something (Like a game) is being played in fullscreen mode. The only complaint I have with it is that sometimes you have to dig to find the information you want.

Isn't malwarebytes free and able to run with other security suites? I just supposed I'd use that along with whatever Security Suite I choose.

I've read bad things about Norton, and one person recommends Kaspersky. Any more takers?

Perhaps BitDefender? My dad recommends it and, well, he's nutty on computer protection so...

Also, BD has a gaming mode too, allowing certain (it lists them) games to run much smoother and without interference.

How good is that gaming mode? What does it essentially shut down, or is it mostly a marketing gimmick?

@Skyrimus
I shall read up on BitDefender.

Anybody have experience with Avira Premium Security?

I've used Bitdefender and Norton's in the last 3-4 years, and they were both resource hogs at boot-up, especially Norton's.

I'm currently using MSE (arrgh, sorry, I mentioned it!) as there was an interesting article about it recently (forget where), which compared it more than favourably to Norton's and another program I hadn't heard of.
I usually hate MS software, but this is pretty good and at least it lets me use my PC within a couple of minutes of booting up!

There are also online scanners from Bitdefender, AVG and others.

If you search on Google, you'll find more anti-virus programs than you thought possible!

Malwarebytes has a free version, and it vwon't conflict with an anti-virus installation.

You could also try Spywareblaster which helps to block known dodgy sites from your browsers.

Norton may not be the best, but it is far from the worst out there... And before anybody gets any bright ideas; I've been through this before on the forums, and will not change my stance. If you disagree with my opinion, then just move on and ignore it.

Now all that is out of the way, I have been using Kaspersky for the last year or so, and and have been more than satisfied with it...even if it does annoy me at times.

I'm leaning heavily towards kaspersky. What annoys you about it?

Mainly that I have a hard time playing my games with it running, but that's been easily solved by disabling it while gaming. IIRC there's been a few programs that it suspects are suspicious files, but that's also easily resolved by adding them to my exclusions list. Overall, I've been very happy with it.

Out of the two paid AV programs I've personally tried, I find F-Secure to be superior to Norton.

"Kaspazky" hates my older Adobe exe files for some reason, but other than that it does just fine and keeps a pretty low profile. That, MWB and Chrome do a good job keeping me free of ITD. Besides, I really appreciate a company that doesn't spam my email with alerts.

Perhaps it knows that Adobe products are a common exploitable for infection?

In other news, Java is now at Version 6, Update 26.

I use Norton at the moment and have never had a single virus and it's never given me a single problem.
I've used avira before and that was pretty good too.

ESET NOD32 is just an AV, no firewall. So should I get the ESET Smart Security?
