Best SATA HDD for media?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:15 pm

Hello I was wondering if anybody can help me find the best Hard Disc Drive I can get for use of media.

I want a TON of space I mean a TON for lots of movies, music, pictures, and some games.

It needs to be SATA not PATA

And Load/Transfer speeds need to be at least average for SATA HDDs.

And Fast Streaming to an Xbox 360 console via Windows Media Player is essential.

I am on a low money budget so the "greatest value for your money" would be awesome!

Thank you all for the help!

What do you mean by "some games"? Do you plan on having games actually installed on it, or what?

For pure file space, WD Caviar Greens are the biggest bang for your buck, but the reason is because they aren't fast. Plenty fast to serve up media, but if you are playing any games that store their files on it or worse, have an OS installed on it, you'll definitely feel the difference.

If installing an OS or games on it, you'll definitely want something faster, Caviar Blue, or preferably Caviar Black.

Beyond that, the most important thing you can do is keep it nice and defragmented. To that end I recommend MyDefrag. Auslogics is great and zippy, but for large amounts of files, MyDefrag wins for it's strong ability to consolidate free space in one big chunk.

The Games I mean are Oblivion, Morrowind, Fable 1, and a few others. Not really for playing on Oblivion and Morrowind just modding. But yes I will have Windows XP installed on it.

I will look into the Blue and Black ones real quick.

For media, they dont need to be that fast. Just reliable and able to store a lot of items. I plan on buying http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136783 for my personal media server. I am currently using one of these as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145420 Another 500GB from Seagate my TV shows. They have worked fine for about 2 years.

He's going to have both Windows and games installed on it, it's not just for media

You are looking at 500 GB then max storage for a drive that's good enough for OS install. This looks like the best in your price range: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181
