Right now the best video card by a significant margin is the AMD 7970.

The best midrange is the Nvidia 560ti until AMD release their lower spec 7xxx cards.

There is no such thing as a "best" for this game, since a great many, dating back a couple of years, can all run it on its Ultra settings, including many that are far less expensive than Asus' GTX 560 is. More than the GPU, in the case of this game, a relatively good CPU with high core speeds, and no less than two cores, makes all the difference.

I think that a good PC for Skyrim should be running its cores at no less than 3 GHz, personally.

Recommended Specs (For running Skyrim on "High" settings at 1920x1080 resolution)
  • Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
  • Processor: 3.0 GHz Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU
  • 4GB System RAM
  • 6GB free HDD space
  • DirectX 9 compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with 1GB of RAM (Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 or higher; ATI Radeon 4890 or higher).
  • DirectX compatible sound card
  • Internet access for Steam activation

As said above there really isnt a best card to play games with. You need a good balance between components. I am using a 7970 and its great, but most people wont want to spend ~$600 on a graphics card alone.

If looking to upgrade your current system, what power supply unit, processor, amount of RAM, and current video card do you have?

The GTX580 absolutely eats Skyrim up.
19*12 on ultra, post processing, every 2k texture upgrade I can find and it just goes "more please".

Not sure I'd buy one now the 6 range coming soon, but there could be some decent price drops when it does??

Please don't make recommendations when you don't know what the O.P.'s PC specs are. He doesn't need to waste $550 on an overpowered video card for a low or midrange computer.

We need to know

Processor model number
Power supply name and model number (or at least capacity in watts)
Current video card
Make and model of computer if its pre-built/retail
Budget

There is no best card for Skyrim, that's not how it works.

Well, the best gaming cards on the planet performance wise are the 7970s. May not be best for your budget, but best performing.

/if you'd asked this same question last month it'd have been one of the cards I'm using

Budget aside, it may not be the best for the OP's system.

The card may be bottlenecked by the rest of the system which would make it a total waste of money: if you put a Ferrari engine in a Toyota Yaris, you'd still have a Yaris...

Also, some other compnents may also have to be changed to even get it working depending on the OP's system configuration.

meh, I'm responding to the thread title, if OP isn't asking the right question and providing the required info I'll take it at face value: What card will play Skyrim with the highest FPS and most demanding circumstances. That card is currently the 7970. Besides, 'bottlenecking' video cards is a very odd ball thing that people have taken into very bizzare conclusions. Even a 2Ghz dualcore system would get enormous performance out of such a card, its when you get into multi-card setups that you should be wary of the board's PCIe lanes and 'spare CPU' to devote to the driver's needs. There is indeed more of course but in the scope of 'best card to play Skyrim'...the answer at this point is pretty easy.

lol ok sorry I am not too computer literate, please excuse me. Here are some specs:

Processor: Intel® Core(aTM) 3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHz 3.10 Ghz
Installed memory (RAM): 2.00 GB
System type: 32-bit Operating System
Display: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

Like I said the only issues I have are the floating items and I cannot see far into the distance doe to my settings are on low... as was recommened by the game I think. Thanks again for your time.

The game's auto-detect recommendations are trash. It put everything on low for me, and all the view distance stuff down to 2, when I actually have no real problem playing with them on max.

Hi, I am having an annoyance at the floating items glitch
This has nothing to do with the video card, absolutely nothing!, this is to do with havok and the way it's been implemented in this game, one I see in all play throughs is a giants club floating upto the heavens, also any objects like rocks floating are because of bad placement during development.

But that aside, you do need to upgrade that card, personally I would not settle for anything less than Nvidia GTX260 minimum, ATI Radeon HD5850 or HD5870.

I recommend NVidia cards. Drivers at this moment very buggy both for ATI and NVidia, but NVidia have almost always better drivers and it can eat games even with bugs. ATI cards for game developers are headache, it's good to develop on them, but run on NVidia (because if you develop for ATI, game will work for NVidia, but if for NVidia, it will work even with bugs in the code and ATI will fail). I'm not a fan of any company, but telling this from experience of games development.

Yeah currently the BEST card without price in mind.. is a 7970.... it just cannot be currently touched....

Most of the best solutions are single GPU cards.... not dual gpu cards.... or dual video cards or more...

Either way.. currently the BEST bang for the BUCK video card on the market for skyrim is most likely:

ATI Radeon HD6950 2gb

If your budget is under $300 the GTX 560 448. Asus has one along with MSI and EVGA,

The GTX 570 comes in @ around the same price as the 448 and performs better + you get a better cooler generally for the 570 (check asus DCII etc). The real question should be why to upgrade now, when the next series of gpu's are just a few months away.

I have no doubt your experiencing that issue. However it's not caused by a lack of a good Gfx card directly. It's the game engine in general.
It still beleive it to be a good idea to upgrade your PC if you can afford to budget for it, especially since it might mean multiple upgrades. If you state a budget I'm sure we can start suggesting upgrade parts for your system. Also if possible can you state your wattage of your powersupply (along with brand) so we can get an idea if that needs to be upgraded too. Since new parts often draw more power.

The nvidia GTX 560 (non-ti) or the AMD 6870 would be a good match for your system. It may also be worth increasing the RAM to 4gb. Also check that your power supply (PSU) is good enough for a more powerful graphics card.

Another one prove that NVidia better for end user: right now developing dx8->dx9 convertor for SIlent Hill 2 and 3 (they not working, nothing rendered in 3d) and in game splash screen nvidia logo displayed. Why it not works? Because it's port from consoles and most of 3d programmers not very professional, vertex shaders of this game contain bugs and they don't want to compile. But they work on NVidia card perfectly, perhaps driver recompiler/optimizer fix errors or videocard can get them. Again, ATI is very strict and you will have too much problems, especially trying to force in drivers some features (antialiasing f.e.).
