Best & Worst Superhero Costumes In Films

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 8:59 am

So "Avengers" came out on Friday and it is AMAZING!

Probably the best Superhero film made since the original "Superman" with Christopher Reeve.

When it comes to costumes what is it with the faceless gods of Hollywood who think they can do a better job on a costume than the Comics that made them famous?

Awful Costume Decisions:

- Spider-Man: White web lines and mirror eyes? Awful... but what they did with the "Black Costume" from the Beyonder planet was even worse turning one of the greatest Marvel Costumes ever created into an ugly joke.

- Daredevil: Daredevil wears a red costume but the "Studio" thought he should be black and forced Ben Affleck into a black suit with a Zorro type headmask for half the film. They only managed to persuade the "Studio" to accept the correct red costume halfway through filming and so the black costume footage had to be digitally re-touched.

- Hawkeye: Cool costume in the comics. No real costume in the films. He looks like any old henchman and it's only really the bow that lets you know who he is.

- Galactus: In the "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" Galactus doesn't just have his costume messed with. He is physically replaced by a big nasty cloud. Garbage. One of the most instantly recognisable icons of the Marvel Universe subbed for a foggy morning instead.

Great Costumes:

When they get it right it the results can be spectacular.

- Thor: I thought they'd mess this up but they've done a brilliant job.

- Captain America: Instantly recognisable in his iconic gear. Helmet could have been better... also could have been a lot worse.

- Iron Man: Simply awesome re-creation of the comic book armour.

What about you guys.

What do you think has been done great and what do you think has been done poorly?

The Green Lantern looks awful. Don't know how he looks in the comics so I don't know if it's a good rendition, but I hate it anyway. Same with Captain America, ridiculous costume. I agree with you on Thor, he looks great in the movies and so does Iron Man. But unlike you I like Spiderman as well, and at least I don't have to look at Tobey Maguire's face.

Hawkeye isn't even a superhero is he? What is his power? Nothing, so he doesn't get a cool suite.

Before you say Batman or Iron Man. Money is their power. 'Nuff said.

Maybe I'm biased. But the Superman custom is always my favorite. Must be the choice of colors.

I didn't mind Green Lantern that much. I'm a huge fan of the comic, and I actually enjoyed the movie and costume.

I love all superhero movies, and I really can't think of any costumes I had any issues with. Maybe Robin, just because I've never liked Robin anyway.

Comics Hawkeye is one of the world's most accurate marksmen (if not the most accurate); Ultimate Hawkeye is even deadlier, as he can actually basically any target with any thing (i.e., once he ripped out his own finger nails and killed nine different armored guards with them, while strapped down). Given that the movies have been a combination of the two universes, one can assume that Movie Hawkeye has a similar powerset.

While he is a hero, he is government sanctioned, Movie Hawkeye certainly isn't popular enough to warrant a comic-like costume. The movies aren't meant to cater to fans (though that does play a part), they are meant to cater to the masses. I guarantee that's the only reason why Black Widow is part of the team, as compared to the rest of them, she's wildly useless; hell, even the relatively "normal" Hawkeye is leagues ahead of her. But since the movies are designed to draw in people, they need an attractive woman as part of the team.

On topic, I like Spider-Man's costume from the Trilogy; the new one is okay, but the "spider-crotch" photo kinda ruined it for me. Even though they'll (hopefully) get rid of it digitally, it's forever stuck in my brain.

So best: I really like Trilogy Spidey, Iron Man, and Movie Cap (1940s)

Worst: Green Goblin, Venom, Movie Cap (Avengers)

Though I thought that 1940s Cap looked bad before seeing the film, so I'll probably end up liking Avengers Cap in action.

Superman has by far the worst costume for 2 stand out reasons

- Blue, red and yellow... what a clash.

- And what's with having no mask, just his hair gelled back and no glasses.... no offence but Lois Lane and all those people at the daily planet must be pretty stupid to not realise within 5 seconds Clark is Superman

Anything to do with Batman is good.
Not really, aside from the Chris Nolan movies and the Arkham Asylum game (not played Arkham City yet) Batman has been a bit crappy also

Rorschach has undoubtedly the best costume ever, and he also stars in the only decent superhero film ever. Thor is one of the worst, though his stupid costume is lost amid the pathetic collection of reels they call a "film" that makes a mockery of Norse culture.

Tsk tsk tsk. You must have bad taste if you didn't find the old 90's cartoon enjoyable (yet dark).

Of course all of the 'new' stuff is better, it's new therefor they have more technology.

The Batman comics are still good.

The new movies aren't better because it uses better technology. They are better imo because the story is better, the film is more serious, more realistic and imo more emotional. I never liked the comic books so I guess that is why I prefer the more gritty approach of Chris Nolan

Doesn't dismiss the fact that the first one is a classic although I agree with the movies. But the cartoon from the 90's was great....... Never played other Batman games either so

Banes costume in Batman and Robin was [censored]... than you had the Bat nipbles. What the hell am I saying? All of Joel's Batman movies were terrible pieces of crap that deserve to be forgotten, and EVERYTHING about them svcked, with the exception of the soundtrack.

As someone mentioned earlier, Venom was pretty lame in Spider Man 3. Most of the time, you were looking at Brock's face over Venom's. I really did like the way they had Ozzy look in that movie though (That's his name right? Ozzy?)

None of those however are nearly as bad as... as...http://www.moviecatcher.net/images/catwoman53071.jpg

This. Also, I like spiderman's costume in the movies, and the organic wrist webs. Galactus would've been incredibly difficult to portray correctly, and to be honest, I always thought he looked awful silly (see: really [censored] stupid).

Then again, the only Marvel comics I read regularly are ones that feature Adam Warlock, and The Hulk. I mostly stick with Vertigo and Dark Horse.

The 90s cartoon with the young guy that replaces Batman? Or did that not spring up until the turn of the century?

Batman Begins, Batman armor/suit. The rest of the series as it goes on is good too though but Batman Begins one is the best to me because he looks the most gaunt, polished, looks the most like batman:animated series.

Azrael00, tell me if I'm right, but doesn't Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin on your avatar want to overthrow Emperor Palpatine and become the ruler of the Galactic Empire using perhaps Darth Vader and mainly of course his personal death star and all the stupidly placed important personnel council group on the death star?

To be fair, most of the older superheroes' costumes are notoriously difficult to translate to film. What (arguably) looks okay in a comic book doesn't necessarily look all that great on a real person. Not to mention that when we're talking about Golden Age heroes - their costumes (especially their colors) rarely had anything to do with what combinations were actually aesthetically pleasing.

You'll notice that you see a lot of highly-saturated red, blue, and yellow predominant in most of their costumes (ie, Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, etc.) That's simply because of the limitations of the printing process at the time those characters were created. Superman's red cape is that color because that's the shade of red that was used in the printer.

Even later on, when you get to more sophisticated techniques (for example, you start seeing the stippling effect to blend colors - can't remember the technical term off-hand,) it was still more economical (not to mention easier on the colorist) to stick the "pure" ink colors. That's why The Hulk is that characteristic green, for example - it was cheaper than the grey he originally was.

Anyway, back on topic -

I'm a fan of Black Widow's costume in the Iron Man and Avengers movies (though that's admittedly more because I'm a svcker for Scarlett Johansson in a tight-fitting outfit than because it's a particularly good costume. ;) )

It's already been said, but I think The Watchmen did a really remarkable job in the costuming department (though come to think of it, there's a rather attractive young lady in that film, as well. I think I'm noticing a pattern, here...)

I actually thought they did a very good job with Captain America in the movie. I suppose it was a bit of a cop-out that his first costume in that movie was meant to be a cheesy propaganda thing, but in the end I think they did very well with keeping the iconic look while also at least attempting to ground it in the feel of the rest of the film. It does look very "World War II - era Captain America," I suppose.
