Bestmost useful race for pure mage?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 8:15 am

What is more useful, the +50 magicka from the high elf, or the +50(?) % magic resistance of the Breton? Not trying to judge which is better, but I like to know what your experiences were :)

I think Breton's have 25% magic resistance. It's useful but it's a perk that's useful to anything, not specifically mages. High Elves are the only race with a bonus specific to mage characters. +50 magicka is like 5 free levels.

That said, it won't make a huge difference once you get a little ways in to the game, and start building your own magicka pool/getting good gear.

The way I look at it ->

Orc -> Pure Melee
High Elf -> Pure Mage
Breton -> either (and it's 25%, not 50% but through alteration perks (i think its alteration) + atranoch stone you can get up to 80%, cap is 85%) so basically, this is the one to be if you want a GOD character.

depends on preference. I'd do high elf if you want to train easier. the +50 magicka (thats 5 free lvls) is extremely helpful as well as using the regen (its uber fast) if you're in a pinch.

If you get the Atronach stone and perk (Alteration tree) and are a Breton, you can be totally immune to magic for 60 secs a day. Also, it is easier to cap your magic resistance for defensive purposes. Bretons are a good defensive race. IMO playing a pure mage you should be relying on your spells for offense/defense, so magic resist is kinda a cop-out that belongs more to the thief/fighter types. Play a High Elf and use ward spells... it's more challenging/fun that way. :)

There's a lot of loading tips in this game that are wrong or misleading... Breton magic resistance is just one of them. :)

Bretons:
25% magic resistance is considerably better than +50 magicka if no no other reason than magic resistance can only be enchanted on rings amulets and shields. though highborn is much better than dragonskin.

youll want to hit 85% magic resistance without a shield ( since you will be dual casting). 15+25+-30+30 : blessing of mara, breton resistance, magic resistance , magic resistance

breton, 25% magic resistance. You don't need magic, it can be cast for free in 2 schools.

The High Elf also has the special advantage of the Highborn power, which allows Magicka to regenerate faster for 60 sec. once a day.

I prefer Altmer because lore says they're the best mages, and they have Highborn, which has saved me more than a few times. Infinitely better than Dragonskin.

And they live longer than Bretons. :tongue:

Admittedly I always forget about it too, and have used it maybe a couple of times. On that note though, I chose a High Elf and didn't even make him a mage, LOL. My character ended being a stealth archer that sometimes uses destruction and restoration in a pinch.

I had an Altmer like this in OB. Very fun.

A lot of people favor Bretons (myself included) because magic resistance is so damned useful. Dragonskin is nothing to sneeze at either, but in all honesty I never use racial powers.

Altmer are ugly as sin though which factors into many would-be mages shirking them out of pure vanity.

depends on if you take advantage of free casting enchanting. if you do then altmer is pointless and the 25% resist magic becomes much more valuable. and even ten the resist frost of the nords or fire of the dunmer is also valuable.

ultimitely i went with imperial because i did take advantage of enchanting and so race didnt matter to me outside of what type of character i wanted to roleplay. i wanted to be an imperial so i did. for no other reason than i didnt want to be too stereotypical and wanted to feel more like a normal human i guess.

A little late but I'll put in this quick thought: If you plan on enchanting robes to no spell cost then I would recommend Breton. :tops:

i play a breton...25% magic resistance, couple that with lordstone and 2 or 3 of the magic resistance perks and you get 80% magic resistance total....that means you're very tough against other mages...and also the dragonskin racial trait absorbs magic from other mages when they're fighting you and that effect works good, i use it all the time, so bretons make good mages...high elves do too...the extra 50 magic is nice at the start of the game but they do have a little less defense against other mages but you can offset some of the lack of magic resistance by picking the lordstone and taking a few magic reststance perks.

With enchanting you can reduce spell cost to 0 in which case the +50 Altmer bonus would be worthless.

thats true the extra 50 isn't a huge deal, i always play a breton but the magic bonus for high elves is prob nice early in the game but not real important even for a mage, especially if you want to use enchanting.
