Beth should do more game-jams

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 11:21 am

I mean, seriously, this was a great idea, it encourages the developers to get creative, they showcase their product, and then we, the consumers get some of the cooler gamejam ideas in the form of free updates? With no end in sight and the possibility of even more through dlc, this needs to be done with every bethesda game

I agree. I thought the "challenge" Todd gave to the team was a great idea and showed the potential Skyrim has for new features (Heck, Todd did say they couldn't get Horse Combat in Skyrim during E3, now look!)

Agreed. It gives devs time to create what they wanted in the game from the beginning but ended up getting cut in the end for whatever reason or just wasn't possible at the time.

@tgl1992, I thought Todd said they had it in but took it out because it didn't feel like a TES game.

I have a different take on Game-jam altogether. Much of the content, like mounted combat and ranged killcams, were things cut from the original game because they weren't finished by release. As for the rest, Game-jam is a marketing tool. It's a way to gauge public reaction to possible DLC features.

no...noooo.

it would just induce more ignorant complaining, and we'd get more idiotic comments such as: "WHY WASN'T THIS INCLUDED ON LAUNCH?" even if it was only conceived this year.

Bethesda did have a budget in this game and stuff gets cut like with most games. I think it has more to do with console users not being able to download user made mods more than it being a marketing tool. Also it gives devs a relaxed timeline to focus on something they would like to see in the game instead of being rushed by a deadline. They would've easily charged us for these DLCs (horse armor... ugh) but they didn't.

Just a question..... So the week the gamejam stuff was being made, were the coders not getting paid ? I mean if all the game jam stuff was done for free this argument works. If they were paying the coders when they were making the game jam stuff then I dont get the budget commment.

How is it ignorant? Why wasn't this included on launch? (Should say the game jam was what? before they released Skyrim when they had free time at the end so it must have been thought of a long time ago) Why couldn't they have just released this game a year later and actually spent time fixing bug issues. They can't claim to have tested their game when after playing for 3 hours in any direction used to turn up bugs. I'd much rather have a non buggy playable game with these features in from the start. Glad they are actually doing something, just wondered why they can't have done something sooner.

The second people stop [censored]ing is the second games get created that are just pig food for the masses.

That's a good question, I have no idea. From what I understand they were doing this on their own time. I may be mistaken though.

They still came to the BGS office to work on the game, but since they had just finished crunching on the game to get it out the door in time for the official release, it was all very relaxed and free form.

When your game sells 12+ million copies, publishers tend to give you a lot more room to do as you please.

I'm really not for another Game Jam. They showed plenty the first time around, and in January they promised data fixes in the way of difficulty balancing. Horse Combat is all good and fun, but honestly you will probably spend about 2% of your game using it and there are still a lot of issues that could be addressed that would make everyone's experience in Skyrim a lot more fun.

So then they were still getting paid. So the game jam stuff was paid for by Beth. So would that mean they were not counted in the final game budget ?

Yeah but Game Jam stuff was done before Skyrim sold 12 million. It was basically done week of release if I remember. So I dont get your comment.

From the looks for the Game Jam, it looks like the developers did it for FUN rather then making it solely for the purpose of making DLCs.

For anyone who have done modding, i think they should know this best.
You should MOD for fun, not make it a chore, that way you actually enjoy doing it, and the quality shows.

If anything, the game jam showed me that Bethesda developers did have much fun in screwing around with the CK lol

It still sold massively in the first day of release, and was a behemoth commercial success, so I don't really get your comment.
