Bethesda, what are you doing to fix this?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:08 am

Did Obsidian and Bethesda just decide to not test this game? Across all platforms people are having major bugs and even people scraping by still have little hiccups. This is beyond ridiculous. They've had two years to make this game and it's not like they were starting from scratch.

More to my point, has anyone seen anywhere online yet where Bethesda or Obsidian has officially addressed this mess other than reviewers saying they "talked to somebody at Bethesda and they are aware of the issues"?

From looking at the problems with this game, across all platforms, I'm so glad I didn't pre-order this, despite initially looking forward to it.

I loved Fallout 3, and I persevered with it in spite of all the bugs, freezes and crashes on the PS3 version. But I'm not about to go through all that hassle again, so you won't be getting my money for this game until such time as I read that you've properly patched it. Which I'm guessing, based on Fallout 3, will be never.

I'm sorry, but this is just unacceptable. As capeo has said, you didn't have to start from scratch, and you've had two years to resolve the numerous issues with the Fallout 3 game engine. I'm not sure what to put it down to, but I can only assume you're either incompetent, or you don't care about the quality of the product you're putting out. I can't see why else you would release a product that is so obviously unfinished.

Is this really a product you feel you can be proud of?

I'm replying to this because I also would love to hear some information regarding this (although no one is ever going to know we are posting on this forum).

There should be no bubbly provided for the release of this project. I find it EXCEPTIONALLY DIFFICULT to believe that these bugs just suddenly "appeared" and the devs were not aware. All the "soft skills" situations seem to work great (aka -- the 'experience' is great) but the coding is literally spinning heads.

Honestly? I hope these bugs get posted to YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToKIkw3LIoQ.

It is so unfortunate to have to say that such a great franchise like Fallout is going to need to be embarrassed in order to get treated right. I almost appreciate the youtube bug videos more than having to deal with the gameplay itself. I hope they keep getting posted until we see some answers outside of "We are working on it" and "These things don't happen over night" (that is what the 2 years before the game release is for).

Edit: That YouTube video (from ~14 hours ago) is @ 35k views already this morning. That is almost twice as many as BethesdaSoftworks - Fallout New Vegas Video (which has been up for two weeks plus)

Lol, that bug got so many hits in YouTube because it's been posted in places like N4G, Digg, etc... But, at least, the game is "playable". I mean, it's horrendous, but the main focus should be put on freezes and crashes, I believe...

Bethesda/Obsidian/whoever, we want official word!

I can live with a lot. Lag crossing zones, things floating, etc. But crashes at a high rate are just unacceptable. Quest breaking bugs are unacceptable. Corrupted saves are unacceptable.

I don't get it. There were no major changes to the engine AT ALL. You'd think it would have been refined not made worse.

The guys at Kotaku asked for official word and got this:

Patches are coming. Pete Hines, marketing man at Fallout studio Bethesda Softworks, tells Kotaku that "We are currently working on releasing patches/updates as quickly as possible for Fallout: New Vegas, for all platforms. Announcements regarding the patches are forthcoming." He advises anyone seeing this head-turning bug to re-verify their files on Steam, as the issue is due to a "corrupt mesh file."

So, there we go, I guess.

Exactly, that's what I mean. Fallout is huge and I could pretty much understand weird issues like the gecko stuck in the rock or the rolling heads - though it would be appreciated if it didnt happened, and well, at least now you know that the heads issue is a corrupted mesh issue. But crashes (low or high rate!), game-breaking bugs (quest or non-quest related)... yes, they are completely unacceptable! that's what i meant. Please, devs: first that, then "minor" issues. People want to play, not to suffer.

Bout the engine, maybe it was refined... but maybe before there were 10.000 bugs and now there are 1.000...

It may be playable to some but i can't get near Novac without freezing, i managed to get to the center of town by looking at the ground as i went in but as soon as i looked up to talk to someone it locked up instanly.

You are correct Layman. Both Bethesda and Obsidian put very little effort into testing their games. What these companies do is make the game and use the public response to see what should be fixed. They are in the business to make money. However one of the draw backs of their business model is that they are losing customers to other more developed game companies. I won't name any names but they are always looking to capitalize on each others mistakes, Obsidian. We all have a choice in the games we play. Show Bethesda that you would rather play another developers game by not buying products made by Bethesda and Obsidian. They will learn from this lesson and they will hire testers and listen to the testers and then they will produce a better product. I returned my copy of Fallout 3 after a few days because of the arrogance of Bethesda in their desire to wait to release a fix to a product that should of never of been released in its condition.

I almost went out and bought New Vegas, I thought maybe now that Bethesda was allowing another developer to take over that things would change. I'm so very glad I did not. In fact just to let you Bethesda and Obsidian monitors know I never bought another Bethesda product since. I wanted to play the DLC when it was released but I didn't. You have confirmed for me that your company is a waste of space in the gaming industry. At a time when the economy is down and every dollar counts you waste your time and lose your money on a product that even your most die hard fan-boys see as having faults that a simple employee making no more than $11.00 could of pointed out for you. I would love to play Fallout games. Consider selling the rights to develop the next Fallout to a game company with a proven track record. Save the game and let a real developer take over.

By the way, I said my peace, I hope you fans of Fallout get your moneys worth. You are treated unfairly for your devotion to a game you love. I hope that changes.

Like R* for instance. Take a page from their devs. They're somehow able to make huge open worlds that both look better and run hundreds of routines at once without gamebreaking glitches. Obviously, in R* games there aren't nearly the number of quests and people to talk to but they obviously have got the stability of their environments down.

And for the record: 4 hours played last night, 2 freezes that required me to restart my PS3. It is disheartening.

Had the same/a similar issue. Have managed to progress though in the game. I describe the problem, plus how I've solved it here:

May not help you but it's worth checking out.

Thanks for responding, hope a few patches will get rid of the crashing problems...

I can wait a while as long as I know someone is working to fix things.. great to hear..

I have the game on 2 platforms - without the crashes the game would be freakin awesome, a definite keeper...

I know! I couldn't find the NCR people (including lieutenant Hayes) after the quest "i fought the law" and there was only the damn robot in the vicky and whatever museum in Primm! (I've heard that after electing a sheriff you can gamble in there) and now after looking on these forums apparently people can't even get into the Strip! basically the centerpiece of the entire game/new vegas!
This is a poor effort. I know with games this vast, there are bound to be a few bugs to slip the net, but this is just disappointing obsidian, I thought you would do better than this.
