Bill S.978

Post » Sun Jul 03, 2011 4:16 am

you should keep in mind that this bill's purpose is not directly to harm youtube lets plays, but is a sideaffect of trying to crack down on the piracy of copy righted materials such as movies and songs by electronic means.

they simply made the mistake of leaving it as open ended as that, which means the level of which this can opress the public depends upon who happens to be monitoring and enforcing the bill should it happen to become law.

I understand that. My problem is since I've been using youtube back in 2007. I've seen a lot of people removed from youtube for uploading video game footage they put up themselves without any good reason. Now the government wants to step in to make the situation worse by making an open ended bill leaving them with unlimited power.

I hope the bill fails miserably. :flamethrower:

I've been uploading videos as a hobby for years and this doesn't make any sense. What irritates me the most is the fact that their are way more important issues than this.

No they removed that limit too, I have a video that is 15:43. I remember reading something about them removing the limit as a whole because of their birthday or reaching X amount of users or something of that nature.

For specific users they can. That privilege can be revoked leaving you with a 15 minute limit.

thats true. but its not up for a vote today, or tomorrow. it could be a couple of months before this actually gets voted on. it takes a long time for a bill to come up to vote, there is a long list and there is a priority set. its just that this bill has been drafted reletivly recently. I don't think its even be debated on at all.

Is it really piracy? It's not like you can download the video (legally) anyway.

It's not like Youtube videos with games/music/movie clips in them are harming the companies (unless they've uploaded a whole movie) anyway. If anything, it will be benefiting them, I've gone out and bought albums of bands that I've found on Youtube.

What about music videos? There are some songs I like to watch the video, and they don't play them on the TV

uploading full movies or just the songs... yeah it technically is. but lets please not take this into a thread about piracy: and whethor or not it hurts the industries. because the moderators tend to shut those down, since the rules clearly state that posting about having pirated or talking about piracy can lead to an ameadiate warning.

the people who own the copy right to the music video can upload it, or give permission for it to be uploaded. so music videos will still be on youtube, there just won't be a thousand reposted ones floating around (should the bill ever become law.)

It's not going to make a difference. How many times have we looked up songs that were uploaded by somebody without permission?

The most that will happen is the video will get taken down

This is a stupid bill. And it'll affect people all across the world, not just Americans. I'll be ashamed to live in America if this passes.

it certainly would affect people across the world, although not necissarily legally. people from countries other than USA who upload videos that would break the law this bill purposes would not be subject to its enforcement. unless the US govt asked for an extradictment, but why go through all that...

I am predicting that should this become law it would be almost impossible to inforce, since considering how many uploaded videos now would break that purposed law you simply could not arrest and conduct a trail on that many people, it would shut down the judicial system. not to mention cost to the govt. to conduct said inforcement.

its stupid, but it has a disturbingly probability to pass considering the following.

its sort of like if there was a bill that proposed murder should be a felony (which it obviously is, this is just an example so go along with it please) but because of unintended broad phrasing killing an animal like a deer for food was also defined by the bill as a felony. naturally that bill is stupid and should not be enforced, but voting against it would be interpreted as voting for murder to be legal, and politicians won't vote like that because they know their political oponents will use it against them.

They do try to extradite people for this sort of thing, astonishingly, even in cases where it's not actually illegal in that person's home country.

Still, look at it another way, it's actually pretty good news. Drafting laws like this means they've succeeded in getting all the real criminals off the streets and are now looking for other ways of occupying their time productively. That's how it works, right...?

I am not a big fan of things like this. I dont make videos on youtube (or any other site), but cracking down on stuff like this just seems a bit....ridiculous. I am for a free and open Internet.

This is a good question. If, for arguments sake, I were to upload a whole bunch of things that this bill would make illegal. What exactly could the US government do? Just because they churn out some shiny new law, doesn't mean it applies over on my side of the atlantic.

first off, this is [censored]. Secondly, if the LP'er is american and is ultimately shut down, wouldn't his international fans also suffer?

That is incredibly stupid. The bill would just about murder Youtube entirely, as well as any other site that streams and hosts copyrighted material on a regular basis. [censored], the majority of my time spent online is enjoying my freedom to listen to and watch copyrighted material. And like David said, there's nothing stopping companies from getting involved should they not want their material streamed. The only thing this bill would do is further busy the American government to try and fix something that 1) isn't broken and 2) is a vital part of the internet. It's like passing a bill stating that nobody can carry a cell phone out in public.

Edit: Went ahead and sent the letter, and I posted the link on my Facebook wall as well. Might as well try and fight this.
