Bit of basic help?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:16 am

Well i'm just starting NV for the first time now, and I made my first character just to check what it's like, and there are these new skills... like survival, and some other odd ones, which increase gun damage, lower accuracy, etc etc.

At the same time, all the SPECIAL stats seem to gear more towards weapons (more then they did before), like needing strength to even balance a weapons aiming...
So anyone wanna suggest to me a build for a ranged small guns character whom tries to avoid getting to close into combat.

So any suggestions for builds and such would be awesome ^^

I went with the "average at everything build"
Strength: 5
Everything Else: 6

Works for me just fine.

Improve mainly your gun skill (and energy).
Take all the improve accuracy in VATS perks.
Take jury rigging

I cannot think of a build off my head but play on how you wanna play. Then on your second play-through; go for builds.. I also recommend not putting any points into survival or barter.

IMO a decent balanced build for your average gun nut.

I would go with luck 10. every other shot or so will be a critical hit.

Survival was new to me too, its helpful for hardcoe mode or something of the sort. as for the other thing your talking about those are what are known as traits, they where in all the other Fallouts besides 3. They give your character a more personalized feel too them and a small attempt to balance you out so you aren't the god of the wastes. if your going to be a sniper then get the trait that makes it so you fire slower but your less shaky, that kind of thing. Adds more depth to the game imo.

I wouldn't say that Charisma was unimportant. It's going to depend on how you want to play. You'll be talking with different factions so CHARISMA will matter along with Speech. You'll be in New Vegas and if you want to gamble, LUCK will be important too. You'll be able to buy implants to improve each SPECIAL once but it's expensive. FNV isn't only about shooting. Good luck. :)

Almost forgot, Charisma is also important to Companion Nerve.

I think I remember you from another thread... you're coming in from Fallout 3, right? That's what I did. Here's my tips.

I basically built my first character like I'd build an F3 character. You'll see as you go along that there are some pretty different emphasis's in FNV -- Speech can be used extensively (and when you see the number of speech checks you'll probably throw some points in there), if you wish, and there's a lot of fiddly stuff like crafting based on Survival, Medicine, Explosives and Science. But honestly, you can play your first character like an F3 character and you'll do fine; you'll catch on to the differences and have some foresight when you make your next character. The new stuff is fun but not essential.
What else? Oh, expect to take more damage in VATS. Be prepared to be frustrated with armor. Combat armor is rare, expensive and hard to maintain. You'll lack some protection, but your best bet is reinforced leather. You'll only get perks on even numbered levels, so half of F3. Don't bother trying to climb on top of mountains -- they have invisible walls keeping you off (you can get high enough to snipe, if you want). Karma's only slightly important -- it's all about factions here, but they are all pretty easily grasped. Oh, yeah -- skill books are very rare (around 4 of each, with a couple exceptions) and there are less skill points earned each level, so don't expect to max your skills. At level thirty you are still a combat monster and master of all trades, so it's not as bad as it sounds. You'll get (weak) perks for completing challenges like killing # bugs, so that helps too. You're on your own with the Traits, though I took a couple. Wild Wasteland was a disappointment except for the Alien Blaster.

Hope this helps. I'm sure I forgot some stuff.

Here's a link with a really good build (on a really good wiki no less).

You can buy implants that increase a stat by one, and there is one for each special stat. You can buy one per point of endurance.

Strength: melee strength, carrying capacity and weapon handling
You can have two companions, each of which can hold about 250lbs so weight is less important. If you go guns or energy weapons, five strength + implant bringing it to six is enough to handle a sniper rifle.

Perception, you need 6 to get the better criticals perk. Enemy detection range is useless because the first companion you find early in game gives you enhanced sensors perks that gives a huge detection range.

Charisma also boots follower's offense and defense. In HC mode followers die, in normal mode they just get knocked out. You can also take party time mentats that boost charisma 5 points, which in turn gives followers +25% damage and damage resistance.

Luck: With a 10 luck (implant and a lucky garment) you can easily hit the 32k slot jackpot. I made over a 100k before getting banned from four of them.

I apologise for the snarkiness...it wasn't intended.

Best to choose 'speech'. It's the killer perk in this game. You only need one combat perk, 'repair' isn't the necessity it was in F3.
