Bizarre sound problem

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:04 am

I've just started getting this very odd sound bug that causes the volume to dip in certain places. For example if I'm in the Crimson Caravan area the sound is fine, but as soon as I enter the main office the volume dips to whisper quiet. Gunshots are barely audible, dialogue is a whisper.

Even weirder than that, if attack the Crimson Caravan people in the office, the volume returns to normal levels, then when they are all dead and the fights over, it goes back to whisper quiet...if I walk back outside, volume is fine again.

Whats going on?

That'd be a positional min/max scripting problem more than likely. There's one that fixes bullets being loud/soft/loud.

How could a script affect the games volume setting on the Windows Mixer?

This reminds me of a problem I had the first time I played MIST. That game kept cranking up the volume.

do you have a DxDiag?

I noticed you have some mods installed. does the vanilla game have the same issue?

It's possible your have a software mixer that is trying to auto-adjust the levels. Check the settings for your sound cards mixer software. (not the default windows one) some of them come with auto equalizer's that can do this.

It could also be a 3rd party DirectShow Filter (Codec pack) Uninstalling them or using http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1133488-directshow-filter-codec-reset/ May help.

Okay, I'm going to bump this. I have the same issue.

Here are some observations:

I'll try to post some useful information, and Ringosis, you should post yours too, we could compare and try to find the cause?

I have ffdshow, Haali and AC3 codec's and software installed, however, I can successfully disable them (to the point where WMP can't play .ogg, and most of my movies don't play) and the game still keeps changing the volume slider in Windows. This makes no difference what so ever.

I've installed the OGG Vorbis Codecs too and disabled the others which also makes no difference.

I have Realtek onboard sound with the latest drivers and all "Enhancements" (EQ, Loudness, etc.) disabled. The sample rate is set at 16bit 44100Hz, changing this does nothing.

In "Communication" under sound options everything is off. I've tried routing the sound through my HDMI cable. (I think this uses the GPU as the audio processor or something, or I'm wrong) Anyways, It doesn't make a difference.

I'm using an Nvidia 9600M GT and I've tried the last 3 drivers which also make no difference.

And finally, the game doesn't let you change the volume slider manually. It just snaps back into place when you try to turn it up.

There are a couple of other "fixes" going round. The Nexus dxd9.dll makes no difference, nor does the Silent Hill patch. I currently use that Nexus .dll currently because of the immense lag that occurs with NPC's.

So, ideas anyone? Also, do the developers visit this forum often, or should I post this elsewhere for a greater chance of getting help?

Pretty much taken the same steps. Using a Creative X-fi Fatal1ty. Uninstalled and reinstalled every codec I have, disabled FFDshow, Haali, AC3, etc, turn on/off all the sound cards like EAX and stuff (even tried turning on SWM to force the levels out, no dice).

Same issue with the mixer, if I go into an area where the sound drops, and then try and alt tab out to manually turn the mixer back up, it just snaps back to 0 everytime.

Here's my Direct X diag

Oh, and yeah, it does this regardless of mods. Tried reinstalling.

It definitely appears to be linked with the radio/codecs. Leaving the radio on in areas where the volume drops keeps the volume at the correct level, but it will drop back between songs.

I've sorted my problem. Apparently it's the my onboard Realtek drivers. This only happens with Fallout but I've completely removed my Realtek drivers and the issue is gone.

Now I'm planning on systematically installing audio drivers till I find one that works without the issue.

I don't have any Realtek drivers :-/ The most annoying thing is, the sound was working fine before and I've no idea what's changed to break it. Didn't install any audio drivers or codecs or change any audio related settings as far as I remember.

has there been any fix to this yet? it looks like when its time to queue in the ambient music the volume slider goes up. walk inside or wait for the current sound track to end it slides down. why is fallout even playing with volume levels in the first place?
